What’s the Church view on killing in the army?
Thanks, and I’m not in the army, but I am thinking of joining after high school. From the CCC -
2306 - Those who renounce violence and bloodshed and, in order to safeguard human rights, make use of those means of defense available to the weakest, bear witness to evangelical charity, provided they do so without harming the rights and obligations of other men and societies. They bear legitimate witness to the gravity of the physical and moral risks of recourse to violence, with all its destruction and death.
2307 - The fifth commandment forbids the intentional destruction of human life. Because of the evils and injustices that accompany all war, the Church insistently urges everyone to prayer and to action so that the divine Goodness may free us from the ancient bondage of war.
2308 - All citizens and all governments are obliged to work for the avoidance of war.
However, “as long as the danger of war persists and there is no international authority with the necessary competence and power, governments cannot be denied the right of lawful self-defense, once all peace efforts have failed.”
If you yourself are in the Army, I’d recommend asking your base chaplain about the matter.
Thank you for your service Lt.i am a West Point grad and was a Lance missile platoon leader at the age of 22, responsible for the lives of my soldiers and tens of thousands more. i was blessed by God because i was in Germany in 1979-1983 and i was never asked to use the nuclear weapons that i was charged with in case of an attack by the Soviet Union.
Jack, give it a lot of thought and prayer. Thanks, and I’m not in the army, but I am thinking of joining after high school.
Think harder about the Marine Corps. Thanks, and I’m not in the army, but I am thinking of joining after high school.

I had a very dear friend in high school who joined the Army and went into the medical corps. He got to do Army stuff, but didn’t have to shoot anyone. :knight1:Thanks, and I’m not in the army, but I am thinking of joining after high school.
As far as I know, the Church believes in a “just war” theory, meaning, not one of offense but one of defense. For one who defends his or her country as a protection against an aggressive nation, I would think that the Church considers these soldiers as martyrs. One also personally has a right to self-defense if one’s life or family is threatened. What’s the Church view on killing in the army?
i never said i was in charge of anything, but i was **responsible for the lives of manyHaving been in the army and knowing alot of former marines. I recommend the airforce.
I really don’t understand mark77s sentiment.( how is it that Lieutenants think they’re in charge of anything?)
Seriously Jack, if you decide to join. You should try to serve where you’ll be the most useful. Good luck and god bless!
Try the Army first. If you fail the psych test, then you can join the MarinesThink harder about the Marine Corps.![]()

Yeah, thank god for the marines.
Easy there Lt. That was a good natured crack at lieutenants. Though I would assert that the cold war was a just war.i never said i was in charge of anything, but i was **responsible for the lives of many
** ( Lieutenants are never in charge, but they are always responsible for the lives of the men and women they serve).
i am truly saddened and sorry if you cannot understand the sentiment that Jesus taught us, that we should never harm anyone, unless we are defending innocent lives!
**God Bless all of you who have sacrificed by serving others, whether in the military or as a mother or father, or as a Priest, Religious or loving brother or sister.
