America Magazine is never very good for the blood pressure for catholics who actually believe in the Nicene Creed.
There is plenty of truth in the magazine article. But what is lacking, as usual, is the recognition that though fallen humans still retain some of our Original Goodness (created in the image and likeness of God), the fallenness is FATAL. We all have a tragic flaw so profound that our own mere efforts will NEVER be enough to overcome them.
We need mercy, forgiveness and grace. We need Christ. Without him, the best of methods, attitudes, listening and human charity will fall short. At the very best, all that will happen is that we will mask our barbarity and inhumanness in soft words and civil tones. Is that an improvement? Only if it results in parties at odds actually both remaining at the table AND making progress in overcoming our barbarities. If, on the other hand, this approach serves as an oratorical lullaby and leads to catholics making peace with sin, injustice and inhumanity in the world it is an abject failure.
Vatican II truly DID introduce a new style of evangelization and witness to the way the Church speaks to the secular world. But it quite simply does NOT endorse compromising our values or beliefs in the name of “being nice.”
Obama is a nice guy. But that simply cannot be allowed to be an excuse for the fact that he is systematically greasing the skids that lead to women choosing to have abortions. Truth matters.

Fr. O’Malley, a Jesuit priest and author of “What Happened at Vatican II,” simply states that the term “spirit of Vatican II” is meaningful, despite the misuse of the term by those on both the right and the left. I found nothing in the article to be objectionable.
