In what decade was Paul converted?

Is it possible to know the general time period, or how many years after Christ’s death, Paul was converted? Also, why did God appoint Paul to serve the Church in such a huge way if Peter was to be the head of the Apostles and the first pope?

Paul was probably converted within 2-5 years after Jesus’ death and resurrection. Paul became important in spreading the Gospel to the Jews and the gentiles outside of Palestine because he was raised in a Greek speaking area of the Roman empire (Paul was born and raised in Tarsus). Peter, James and the other Leaders of the Church were Hebrews and spoke Aramaic as their main language and concentrated their efforts in the Palestine area. Peter and Paul both played a large role in the Church. Peter was one of the ‘pillars’ of Church leadership and Paul one of its leading evangelists.
