Any song with swears in it? Involving sexual innuendo? Talking about alcohol? Where do you draw the line and, is it OK to sing along to inappropriate songs?

i dislike MOST secular music, but specifics would be: lady gaga, ke$ha, katy perry, eminem, 50 cent, dr dre, lil wayne…it goes on and on
if you sing along it kind of implies you agree wit the message of the song

If you can hand the lyrics to a priest and have him sing along with you then chances are the song is o.k. If that might be questionable then so is the music. Think of love of God and neighbor. Do the lyrics promote this love or do they undermine the integrity of our being made in the image and likeness of God?
The main issue today with so many is that we have become desensitized to what sin really is. We hear so much garbage that the lesser trash seems acceptable. I am 51 years old and I can tell you that there was music in my day that was trash. The difference is that we knew that it was and acknowledged it as such. We may have still listened to it but the guilt was pounding at the door. Today the youth accept horrific messages as “expressions” that allow others their “freedom” to be themselves. There are no checks and balances, no judgment of action, and no real discernment. If one were to be critical then that person is labeled as “judgmental” and thrown into the corner. So live and let live…
Unfortunately, it will not be too long where sex acts will be on T.V. and there will no longer be any boundaries for the youth. Our moral breakdown will lead to more desensitization until there will be no definition for sin. It will become all relevant to individual feelings and objective truth will dwell in an empty room…

P.S. I work with the youth and I know that there are MANY great kids out there who are fighting this war of immorality. It is a huge struggle for them and thank God that we have those kids. What I wrote above is not to be taken as a blanket statement but as an ever increasing trend…

Right, because music of a certain tempo and style is clearly always immoral.
I don’t think there is such a thing as music that is always inappropriate for everyone- should a child be listening to music full of references to sex and drugs? Probably not.

Well, I consider inappropriate music to be music that makes you want to sin or pulls you away from God. I would also like to say that I frequently listen to music that many would consider inappropriate (I absolutely LOVE a few Van Halen songs), but I assign my own meanings to it. I can ignore certain parts of the lyrics and enjoy the song as pure music, nothing else. It does not pull me away from God if I listen to Panama. I am also guilty of listening to cleaned versions of some rap songs. Tthe beat pumps me up

I’m with you - I absolutely despise rap and hip hop.
First, I find the actual music to be like nails on a chalkboard - I literally can’t stand listening to any of it. Second, the lyrics are often very profane and disrespectful.

Thats stuff is an xxx rated nursury rhime to a drumm beat. Its all about killing cops and interracial rape. When me and my liberal wife got married we agreed with if we had children that they would not be allowed to bring rap in to the house even. If we found it it would be destroyed on sight. If I was a principal it would be banned in school. Granted many types of music has it’s moments where lyrics get questionable, but rap went way over the top into the wild blue yonder.

A friend posted a link on FB to youtube with a toddler/young children singing to Lady Gaga’s telephone. Complete with handcuffs.
You can’t get any sicker than that.
But as for the topic, I don’t see how swears can be justified in music. Anything that’s all about sexual activities I just have no interest in hearing.
Oh, and Justin Beiber or whatever. There’s something really wrong about boys who look like girls. It reminds me of thsoe passages in the bible where it speaks of men having unnatural lusts and dressing as the other gender, or words to the effect. To slightly derail the topic, just look at what’s considered “hot”, flat chested, skinny women who look more like men. Its like homosexuality without being blatant about it.

I think inappropriate music is anything that makes YOU, the individual, think inappropriate thoughts. Not every type of music is going to do that for all people. But you have to discern what pushes the boundaries and stay away from that.

Actually, if I can’t say the lyrics aloud in church, it’s objectionable “music.” That alone knocks out almost everything except most Country songs… and some of them can be pretty crude, too.
And “Rap” and “Hip-hop” and “Urban ghetto jive” are at the bottom of the barrel as far as “music” is concerned.

As much as I despise the 50 cent trash variety of hip-hop, I manage to find one use for listening to it: When I need a BGM for a dingy joint full of bling-loaded, gun-toting gangsta goons moments before my vigilante protagonists busts in and beats the bejeezus out of them.
Can’t speak for all of them but I find Em to be a mixed man. His dance songs are stupid true but when it’s the ones about his life, family, and more serious issues he gives quite an impact and I find the swear words even contribute to that impact.

For me, I look at the effects of the music. Does it incite me to lust, to immoral/impure thoughts?
Is the music a real work of art? Does it inspire as well as wholesomely entertain? Or is it geared towards manipulation of youngsters and their hormones…

to call Rap “music” is an absolute stretch! It’s just annoying noise with a beat and a lot of swear words.
Any music that is not uplifting is not worthwhile. Praise music is the best, especially classical praise music like Handel’s"Messiah", Bach’s “Passion”, etc. Those musicians were composing thier music to God.

As a musician this question is important to me and of the responses so far I’d say crenfro nails it pretty good.
What reaction does it bring in you needs to be looked at: If you’re singing along to a rap or metal song and the mood it is generating is hateful, angry, violent, unkind… your face is all scrunched up eyes wild… imagine someone from another time looking at your reaction… what conclusion would they come to? That’s the best example I can think of to help you look at it objectively… There are many things that musically are the “norm” for this time that could stand some critical evaluation.
On the other hand if the music is rap or metal message is positive and it fills you with good, positive, charitable feeling (There -are- good rap and metal messages… the genres aren’t to my personal taste, but I can’t ignore the fact that there are qualitative differences in every genre.) It’s also entirely possible that a mellow song has a nasty message behind it. Take for example “Imagine” which, while it contains the words peace and love is actually a condensed version of Marxist doctrine (By Lennon’s own admission)
You should be careful about your music intake as much as your food intake. But I do want to say that looking for the devil under every piece of music is also very unhealthy…

Actually I think it’s a venial sin, but why listen to stuff that isn’t morally right and doesn’t agree with your own values? I truly think music should uplift our souls.
