Are there times when prayer is inappropriate or irreverent, such as when we’re nude, using the bathroom, or during intercourse or some other type of act?

I’ve wondered about this. Muslims have a very hygienic prayer life - which makes sense to me, given we’re praying to God the Father of the Universe. What about us Catholics?

I have no idea what the official answer on this is, but I don’t think so. Isn’t there a Bible verse that says something about praying without ceasing? Granted it might seem odd to pray while using the toilet (and I would feel uncomfortable doing it) but it’s not like God is shocked by our bodily functions. He did, after all, invent those functions. I say pray whenever you’re moved to. It’s better than not praying because you’re worried about it being the “right” time.

I don’t think there’s any time when a person can’t cry out to God in prayer with the possible exception of calling on God to assist them or give them comfort as the commit horribly sinful acts. For example, don’t Mulim extremists always shout, ‘God is Great’ as they commit their act of terrorism.

For a while someone around here had a signature that said this:

A pious friar had the habit of saying his prayers in the restroom. One day the devil appeared and taunted him, saying “You can’t do that!” The friar responded “You, Devil, may have what descends, that which ascends goes to God.”

Or something like that 😛

Reverent or irreverent probably depends mostly on the individual predisposition. Besides, it’s one thing if someone prays when he’s nude, another when he would disrobe for prayer, right? I think disrespect would have to be somehow intended or accepted as a possibility by the one praying. Out of all you mention, using the toilet is the single thing that rings a bell. Supposing the intercourse is lawful and the “other type of act” is not immoral.

Not only did God the Father of the Universe create our bodies - but he does see us at all times, you know. Even when we’re in the shower, on the toilet, having intercourse or in the nude! I’d say there’s nothing wrong with praying at such times.

I’ve heard this attributed to St. Teresa of Avila. Just the kind of flip thing she would say! (In a good way.)

Ooooooo…she used the word “nude”!! Well, I pray when naked in the bathtub, with my rubber ducky, and a lot of bubble bath. Nothing like a prolonged soak in a hot bubble bath to bring the mind to an “attitude of gratitude”, as we say in AA. :getholy:

there is never an inappropriate time to pray, although the style of prayer may vary. What is inappropriate is praying for God to approve or allow something that is sinful. DD finds, as I did when I had small kids at home, that the only time she can spend five minutes alone with a daily devotional is in the bathroom.

Prayer in the nude can be especially important, since it might be a time of temptation for certain people to sin.

No. There are none.

Pray Always.

It makes it harder to sin if you are sincerely praying at the time.

Always pray before, during, and after sex, asking God to join with you and bless and sanctify the act, the children produced, and thanking Him for his gift of human sexuality and holy sacificial marital sex.

This might be too much information, but I like to praise God when I’m nude! He’s given me a beautiful, healthy body; why shouldn’t I? ^^

I imagine the only time God would be offended by whatever state you’re in when you’re praying is if you are intending to disrespect Him, or if you’re praying for justification of a sin, or somesuch. God knows the difference between reverence and lack-there-of, clothed or not. Pray where ever you’re comfortable, and pray often. 👍

Actually if you feel uncomfortable praying in a circumstance, (1) stop what you are about to do and (2) do what God would want you to do in a prayful manner.
