Inappropriate thoughts and mortal sin

does having inappropriate thoughts while really tired, almost asleep, diminish culpability for it being a mortal sin?
 
Yup. Thoughts aren’t sinful in general unless you’re deliberating entertaining them. You can’t control what comes into your mind. If you start thinking sexual thoughts, don’t freak out and try to fight it. Just calmly turn your mental attention to something else.

but see I’m worried that i did entertain them in a moment of clarity. now I’m wondering if i should receive the Eucharist
 
I mean, I don’t want to advise you in your own particular case. I’m not a priest. I will say that being half awake suggests you lacked full knowledge and consent. But I would suggest you talk this through with a priest, especially if you tend towards scrupulosity.
 
Good morning Joe, I suggest that you say the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel , a very powerful prayer, say it as your falling to sleep, guarantee that it will knock those other thoughts out of your head. St. Michael the archangel, defend us in battle, be our dfense against the wickedness and snares of the devil.May God rebuke him we humbly pray and do Thou O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell’ Satan and all the other evil spirits whom prowl about the world seeking the ruin of Souls. What is your evidence that angels have the power to “knock thoughts out of your head”? This would require intervention in our physical brains.
 
Having “inappropriate thoughts” are human and benign behaviors, and are not sinful per se.

“inappropriate actions” are what cross the line.

If you feel wrath or vengeance, or lust or greed, but do not act on them…good for you…you are human, but you have not sinned.
 
Hey Joe 🙂 When I am falling asleep and thoughts are attacking I cross my arms a hand on each shoulder going across my heart .It may have been my mum showing me that guesture of prayer for falling asleep .
And I like to have my rosary or scapular within reach,or a saints relic that I have.
That and the prayers suggested above 🙂
In the situation you have mentioned, in time you will learn in your heart if you are distanced from Gods grace or not .But until then I would say if in doubt ,go to confession.God bless 🙂
 
Then I’d discuss this with your spiritual director next time you see them but I highly doubt you committed mortal sin. You’re probably over-analyzing some passing thought.
