Hi…

Recently I was talking with a friend and for some reason the topic of priests came up and he made some joke about “raping little boys”, and then very quickly after he said “Just kidding”… We are good friends, and I know he wasn’t being serious- he is just being young adult male. My question is, ought I have said something to him? The only reason I wonder is because the horrible, horrible priest scandal in a way kind of asked for ridicule like that- in a way, those jokes seem like a just chastisement, perhaps. I know that a minority of priests are actually guilty of those charges, but its still shameful. He knows that I’m a serious Catholic and thus he quickly followed up with a “just kidding”… Ought I have said something, or is it alright to be able to take a joke like that (after all, I am often guilty of poking fun at cults like scientology)? I dunno. Have I sinned?

SORRY! I didn’t mean to post twice. My computer is jacked up.

Gangsta,
The only way people know we are offended or that we do not welcome jokes of any type is to let them know. I would and have said things to people to let them know you do not appreciate the humor. My best friend had a habbit of making racial slurs and jokes in front of me. I told her I never wanted to hear that stuff said in front of me or my kids ever again. I also used to get priest jokes too. I would make my displeasure known by just stating I didn’t think it was appropriate and asking them if they wanted the actual statistics about other denominations and sexual abuse. This usually stops them, but if they want to see the stats…here they are: Sexual Abuse

If you don’t speak up then you must be prepared to get more of the same from that person and others.

Not only inapropriate, but others pick up on this kind of thing and take it seriously. I am acquainted with people who now believe that all priests, youth ministers and others who serve youngsters are all pedophiles. They got this from such “jokes”.

I have to go through this w/my husband and th epeople from his religion. He’s a JW and they always try to make jokes about this issue. I get angry but I don’t feel confortable enough to tell them things. I do tell my husband though that this happens w/every religion and that the fact that it’s so noticeable in the CC is because we are a big group of people, if not the biggest and most known religion. I tell him about JW elders who have done this too so that he realizes it happens w/every religion, even in his “perfect” community. It’s just sad had everyone targets the CC. Not all Priests are like that, it’s such a small # compared to h ow many Priests there are in the world…

I think it is quite obvious from what you say, that he realised without you saying anything, that you disapproved of the ‘joke’, otherwise he would not have added the “just kidding”.

Priests are human too. They make mistakes too. However hey can be a lot more serious than the mistakes made by the average layman because we look to our priests for guidance. I suspect your friend is now feeling a bit embarrassed by his little slip.
