Inattention during the Rosary

I’m looking for ideas to help me to keep my mind on my devotion as I pray the rosary. I seem able to think of other things on one brainwave while praying on another! Literally. Even if I pray aloud, I can think about my kids or friends, or the upcoming weekend while continuing with my oral recitation. Then, I start the prayer over and try again, but I would like to improve.

I try to meditate on the mystery and to go somewhere which has very few distractions, but, I just can’t seem to get through a single prayer without stumbling.

I am not feeling overly scrupulous here. I know that the Blessed Mother appreciates the prayers and my persistent effort to stay connected to the devotion. I would just like to have a better experience in my prayer with Mary.

Any ideas?
It sounds like a variation of ADD. Is that something you experience elsewhere, or only while saying the Rosary?

We are only human and prayer can be hard to concentrate on. Never give up. Keep praying the rosary! God knows what we are going through and I am sure he is pleased that we at least continue to say the rosary while our minds are in a mess!

St. Michael help me is awesome! Thanks for that suggestion.

I have to agree. I tried it, and it did work a bit.
I guess I have to keep asking for his help.
🙂

God bless.

No, I don’t have any sort of ADD. I do have PTSD which does cause distractibility. I do find, though, that praying the rosary is the most difficult by far.

🙂

I don’t know if I have PTSD - or had it - but I do have ADD. I quit fighting the issue, and turned to saying the Office. Because it is not repetitive, I have fewer problems. Fewer. Not “none”, but it works for me.

I do my best when I use a book that I actually got for my son- praying the rosary with Mary. It has full sized pictures illustrating each mystery. It’s much easier to meditate on the mysteries with a full sized picture, for me, than trying to use my imagination or the small prayer card I have.

Pretty sure there’s a CAL show on this and other “Rosary” issues that was very good. My wife played it for me. I’ll see if I can dig up a link.

One of the points brought up during the show was, if your attention keeps drifting to something while praying the Rosary, maybe you’re subtly being pointed towards something?

I also had the same distraction issues and discovered the following website:

rosary-center.org/joyful.htm

After awhile I found I had memorized the suggested meditations and it made a huge difference. The above link shows only the joyful mysteries, but go to their home page and you should be able to access all. Good luck!

I usually pray the Rosary at night when I wake up and can’t fall back to sleep. Often in the middle of praying it, I will drift off. I figure it is a blessing from the Virgin - she makes me so peaceful that I can sleep. If I wake up again, I just take it from where I left off.
Don’t worry about form too much, just pray it often and keep it near you.🙂

Perhaps this may help .

It is a quote from Pope Paul VI’s Apostolic Exhortation Marialis Cultus .

" As is well known, at one time there was a custom, still preserved in certain places, of adding to the name of Jesus in each Hail Mary reference to the mystery being contemplated. And this was done precisely in order to help contemplation and to make the mind and the voice act in unison. "

So for the 3rd Joyful Mystery one could simply add to the name of Jesus " born for us in Bethlehem ".
For the 3rd Sorrowful Mystery " Jesus , crowned with thorns " .
For the 1st Glorious Mystery " Jesus , risen from the dead " …and so on .

It becomes quite natural with practice .

👍

The Rosary is a gift not a “have to”
Sometimes I can concentrate but at other times I let my thoughts wander allowing the Rosary color these thoughts to Mary’s liking.

Praying the Rosary helps me to sort out my thoughts.

Praying the Rosary is so sweet a gift from Our Blessed Mother and Jesus. I am so grateful! Holy cards, prayer booklets and Gregorian Chants help me focus when I am distracted. Perseverance and time are so healing…

I don’t know if you are still having problems, but if so…
I once found a full Rosary on youtube with scenes from the Passion used for the imagery. It helped me a lot with the Sorrowful mysteries. As a matter of fact, it was difficult to even remember my intentions when those images were in front of me 😦
Also, Father Benedict Groeschel, there was a recitation on youtube with him guiding all of the mysteries. It was helpful too as his voice tends to be so soothing.
I know others have suggested such, and for me in the past I found these meditations to be very helpful.

Here is a link to one I found. I am sure if you look through the person’s channel you will find all the others.

Also, I don’t have a youtube account, so anyone who may stumble upon this, please give the youtuber a thumbs up, or whatever they use on there. 🤷

God bless you. 🙂

Twice this week i have fallen asleep towards the end of each rosary!! Said while in bed at night as was only time to say it.

You may want to have music, too, playing from your computer.

I understand…it is something we all at times struggle with…KEEP on asking the Holy Spiritt to keep your mind focused… I must admit we need some time of separation from the world into the “heavenly realm” so to speak. Don’t let the ememy of your soul convince you othewise…keep pursuing our Lord and he will hear and answer according to His will. Amen.
