Inaudible Low Mass

The past two Sundays we had a visiting priest at the TLM. Throughout the entire Mass including the Gloria, Epistle, Gospel and Credo, he said all the parts silently. The only time he spoke out loud was when he repeated the Epistle and Gospel in English and at the sermon. Now I know that there are parts of the TLM that are supposed to be inaudible, but every other priest that has celebrated the Low Mass said some of the Mass where you can hear the Latin, such as the Credo, Pater Noster and Gospel. Has anyone else been at a TLM where you couldn’t hear a single word of the Latin?

Liturgical abuse, no?

Yes, it is even possible in the TLM. There is a “Latin Mass” about 80 miles away from here. They don’t follow the rubrics either, and simply say the Propers in English. This is a good idea maybe for the Magisterium to make, but completely against the rubrics.

Fortunately for us, abuses in the Latin Mass are much more easily identifiable and there are a lot less options, so its pretty much completely clear when there is something wrong.

I went to a Latin Mass a few weeks ago and there was a substantial part where the priest spoke inaudibly… that’s where I lost my place in the Missal. It was somewhere before the Consecration where the rubrics pretty much dominate the pages and it’s a full time job comparing the rubrics with what the priest is doing.

It was a wonderful Mass and hope to go again next Sunday.

Well, this is normal. Pretty much all of the “Mass of the Faithful” is said inaudibly.
