What are some of your favourite incense brands?

I like Will & Baumer and anything made by a monastery. This is a little off topic, but I think that Cathedral brand is the McDonald’s of incense.

Will & Baumer… Although I’ve never seen a Catholic church use it, we used it all the time at my old Episcopal church.

I’ve seen Will & Baumer used in Catholic (and Oriental) churches.

I’ve said this before, but I haven’t bought incense in 40-some years. The one commercial product that I liked was Three Kings “Cathedral” blend. (I probably still have a small amount of it somewhere, even after all this time.)

What I use is a personal blend of equal parts pure frankincense & pure myrrh, plus 15% (more or less) of floral attar resin (rose or gardenia or whatever). Great smoke, lovely aroma, and not at all acrid. The percentages can vary to taste. And so can the ingredients: many people like sandalwood, for example.

To crush it, I freeze it and then have at it with a hammer. I’ve never tried this, but I imagine it could also be done in a coffee grinder. (Of course, because of the resins, it would have to be a dedicated grinder.)

I didn’t vote since I don’t have a favorite. In the Parish we use Three Kings Natural Eritrea siftings. This lightly scented natural resin incense was picked to try to accommodate those who have a problem with incense.

I dislike the cone and stick stuff that I have experienced, reminding me too much of the smell of my residence as everyone tried to hide their pot & hash smoking, and I dislike strong flowery blends.

I would really like to be able to purchase a small amount of various blends to be able to test them at home.

I bought a box of Will and Baumer “Pontifical” on line and was very disappointed. I remembered from my altar boy days that it was like shiny little red green and gold crystals but it was a box full of wood shavings mixed with some resin beads. When you burn it, it smells like… wood shavings.

I like the 3 kings from Holland, but also one called Byzantine Blend. Also pure frankincense is nice. I got that from the local “head shop” where they also sell the little charcoal discs “they” use to power their bongs. It’s the only place I could find it locally. Also haven’t smelled any incense in the local Catholic church, so you gotta DIY.

Pure Frankincense, mixed with the p blend from Gloria (I think it was P, the fine, red, powdery stuff).

The frankincense is better than any mix I have ever come in contact with, and the Gloria stuff produces wondrous amounts of smoke, without ruining the smell of the frankincense.

I recently bought some Eastern Myrrh thinking it would be a new and exciting experience…yeeeah, I was wrong.
