I recently bought a small censer for my home altar from Monastery Greetings online. I also bought some small discs of coal they sell for home use. I just got all this today in the mail and tried it and the coal lasts for like 20-30 sec then just burns out. I’m going to order incense instead now and I wanted to see what was the most everyone liked the best (smell). Also I wanted to ask if incense lasts longer then this coal. Thanks for all answers!

I use this charcoal and generally you have to blow on it a bit after it is ignited until it glows red. Also while it is igniting its best to put the lid over it as occasionally it will explode. The charcoal is not incense itself, it is designed to burn incense on it.

Please, oh please, try Gloria incense! It is an absolutely beautiful aroma! You can get a small sample vial of it from Aquinas and More!

OHH! And, maybe try Three Kings incense! It’s the incense that His Holiness uses in the Vatican! (well so I’m told)…

Here is the Gloria sample vial…

Pinknash Abbey (pronounced Prinnish) incense is good too…so is Monastery…you can get that here…

Here are some others, the Pontifical, which is the one we see and smell at a lot of churches. It is very popular…

You’ll want to put the incense on the charcoal after the flame goes out, not burn it by itself.

I have had trouble with a couple of recent batches of self lighting incense, one from Monastery Greetings and one from another source. They sparkle and spit but the charcoal doesn’t catch. The charcoal shouldn’t flame but should be a red coal when ready to use. After it gets done its self lighting act I hold it over a candle until I get some glowing spots. Then add the incense.

For my charcoal, I use a brand called Swift-Lite. They’re circular and somewhat thick. They’ll burn very well, though. 🙂

I usually break one of those fast-lighting charcoal disks in half or in quarters. When you “light” this kind of charcoal normally there isn’t any flame.

I hold a match to one end and pretty quickly little sparkles of light sizzle through part of it. Then I put it down in the holder I’m using for burning the incense. I put a couple of the chunks of incense on the little piece of charcoal. The resin in the incense will often cause the incense to adhere to the charcoal. Soon the incense starts to smoke. Left alone it will “burn” (smoke) for 20 minutes or so.

If you have an Eastern/Byzantine Catholic or an Orthodox church near you they usually have book stores which are open after services and they usually sell both charcoal and incense.

We usually burn rose incense in our Liturgy and it is my favorite. 🙂

I also had trouble with some I got at a Greek festival. It was slightly cheaper than what I’d gotten at either our church bookstore, or the Orthodox cathedral bookstore. Never again will I go for the unknown stuff at the festivals.

I find a roll of the charcoal lasts a long time since you don’t need a whole disk-- unless you’re at Liturgy and want enough incense to fill a church. I only want enough to get the smell in my house. I don’t want to make the smoke detector go off.🙂 (Our priest calls it a “successful Liturgy” when the smoke detector goes off. :D)

I don’t wait for the charcoal to turn red. Once the sizzle/sparkle part has happened and I can feel heat I just put it down. It seems to “burn” hot enough to keep the incense going until the whole thing is used up. In any case there seems agreement here that one isn’t looking for any flame to come from the charcoal itself, only from the match as you ignite it.
