incense..?

How does a priest determine when or not he will use incense during mass? I cant find any real pattern to it except that more important occasions such as passion, christmas etc it is always used and then sporadically throughout the rest of the masses

A priest may use incense at any Mass (sorry, I don’t have the citation); it’s up to them as to which days they want to use incense. However, I believe they are especially encouraged to use incense during the more major Masses, e.g., Christmas, Holy Week, Easter, Pentecost, funerals, weddings, etc.

If anyone can get the citations from documents, that’d be great.

So pretty much its just whatever they feel like on other days? interesting. We have one alter server who loves it -he is a big one for pre-vatican 2 ways and one who doesnt like to use it because he finds it irritating (allergic). Also, one priest who uses it every mass he celebrates and one who thinks it discourages people to come to Mass. Thankyou

Fact is a number of people are allergic to the smoke. I go to a Byzantine Rite parish and incense is used pretty much all the time. But we hold back on the amount of smoke we generate because it does make some people sick, and I heard it could be fatal to others.

Especially today where there is a general trend to clear the air. There are less smokers out there and vehicle emission standards are stricter. While the air is cleaner, more lungs out there are less prepared to be exposed to smoke, therefore our priests are cautious with its use.
