While watching the Mass for the installation of the new bishop of Albany, the lector incensed the Evangelary for the Gospel reading. I’ve never seen this before.

Any thoughts?

God bless.

I’m surprised you haven’t seen this done since it’s common if incense is being used at Mass.

From the GIRM:
  1. At the ambo, the Priest opens the book and, with hands joined, says, The Lord be with you, to which the people reply, And with your spirit. Then he says, A reading from the holy Gospel, making the Sign of the Cross with his thumb on the book and on his forehead, mouth, and breast, which everyone else does as well. The people acclaim, Glory to you, O Lord. The Priest incenses the book, if incense is being used (cf. nos. 276-277). Then he proclaims the Gospel and at the end pronounces the acclamation The Gospel of the Lord, to which all reply, Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. The Priest kisses the book, saying quietly the formula Per evangelica dicta (Through the words of the Gospel).

I’m going to use that word on the other altar servers and sacristans.

***Hey, bring me an Evangelery, will ya!

Father would like the large Evangelery brought to the ambo please.

Go stand between the Evangelery and the ambry with an aspergillum and be ready.***

And then I’m going to go to confession.

Very common in traditional masses, especially if it’s a High/Solemn mass. It’s very sad that there are Catholics who haven’t been exposed to this and other traditions.

I’ve never seen it not incensed but I too have never seen it incensed by the lector. It’s always the one who reads the Gospel, i.e., the deacon or celebrant.

The Roman Rite doesn’t restrict the swinging of the censor to major clerics (deacon-priest-bishop). It specifies what must be incensed by the priest, what is incensed by the deacon (which falls to the priest in his absence). A few items are even specified for the server to incense them in the current GIRM.

According to the current GIRM, the acolyte incenses the priest and the people following the preparation of gifts (the conclusion of which is when the priest incenses them), the showing of the gifts (unless there’s a second deacon).

I’m not as conversant with the EF missal’s rubrics… I found an English translation of the Ritus Servandus, and it does not provide for incensing the evangelary as part of the reading of the Evangel, only the ambo and only for the gospel.
