What does the Rubrics say is the appropriate number of “swings” that a priest or deacon must perform when incensing the people? Is it one swing three times or two swings three times?

I’m not sure what you mean by swing, so I’ll just define what I mean in this post:

A swing may be double or single. In some places, one often sees a triple swing used for the Blessed Sacrament. The thurible is lowered in between swings.

The rubrics define the number of swings but not whether they are to be single, double or triple. Three swings are prescribed for the people. The most common is the center-right-left form.

I have seen this done both as three single swings and three double swings. The latter is more common.

In the EF, the server gets to incense the people. Anyone knows what it signifies?

Thanks for the information…much appreciated!! God Bless!

The GIRM gives the following directions about the appropriate number of swings.

The only thing is, the definitation of “swing”. Our Diocesan Master of Ceremonies looked into the original latin, and from that, he fount that the correct definitation of swing is a “double swing”. So if the GIRM says to incence something with “three swings”, then the “timeline” would look like this (x=a single swing)

[bow]----------X X-------- X X--------X X ----------[bow]

Make sense?

In rural farming communities it goes:
[bow]—XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX—[bow]

In the Dominican Rite Mass, the thurible is not swung; it is elevated (lifted).

For the congregation a priest bows, then swings the thurible thrice to the left, thrice to the right and thrice in the middle, before finishing with a bow.

Priests usually only get two swings of incense- apparently this is because they dont’t need the incense as much as the congregation!! 😃

Peace!! 👍

I did a double-take when I saw the title of this thread - thought it had something to do with some GIRM infraction getting people mad. 😉

There is a translation of the 17th century Russian Archpriest Avvakum’s autobiography in which he describes an exorcism of some apparently possessed chickens: “I sprinkled the chickens with holy water and incensed them”.!
