Indecisive about attending HS Reunion

Go. You will feel more regret for not going, than going. If you feel ignored or out of place after the 1st hour, then you can leave and still stay you went!

Unless you were incredibly popular then and are incredibly successful now, a reunion isn’t designed for you.
I personally was neither though my husband could be both depending on how you define “popular”. He was a pretty notorious and eccentric nerd with a really confusing last name. 😛

While I never thought of myself as “popular” as we see on TV and movies , I never caught the attention of any of the boys (my husband and I started dating in college), and I was often a 3rd/5th/7th/9th wheel, I never really suffered socially. I was friends with the geeks and I loved every moment of it. But in my school 1 out of every six students is in the music department. Band was the next biggest deal after football and even most of the “movie popular” people were pretty cool people. I only need one hand to count the number of people who actively teased me.

I was kinda hesitant to go to my 10-year last fall. Most of my old posse went to the 5-year so I had a good time then. But by now a lot of us have more out of state or even out of country. Even though I saw mostly old acquaintances than old friends I still had a good time. Not a lot of boasting at all or answering questions that weren’t asked. No one gave me any flac for being a SAHM, The band kids talked about the old times and took a big group photo. We actually spent more time talking to people we had little to do with back then compared to those we practically lived with. We’re both glad we went.

You know…unrelated but still relevant…I really didn’t have the greatest time at either of my proms as both of my dates spent more time with the girls they wished they could have taken then with me (my school required tickets be sold in pairs at the time). But I still don’t actually regret going to either of them. In spite of all that I know I would have regretted *not *going even more just because it only happens once.

If a few of your friends are going then you,ll have someone to talk to…should you go? it depends on whether your finances can afford the ticket and whether the reunion isnt gonna stir up bad memories eg school bullies

I think it’s worthwhile to go to at least one high school reunion and check it out. I finally went to my 40th and it was interesting. Someone who had a band in high school and still was involved in music played. The food was good. The display of photos, etc. was interesting. I was a shy kid and so didn’t hang out with that many people in high school. So, basically it seemed like I was there with a bunch of late middle aged strangers. If my best friend from high school and her male friend had not been going, I’m not sure I would have enjoyed it as much.

I wouldn’t have an interest in going to a high school reunion. We don’t do as many class reunions in Canada as the US does. It would more likely be a milestone anniversary for the school, not the class. That being said, 90% of the people I was truly close to in high school, I have kept in touch with. Facebook has put me back in touch with people I would consider “friends” but not friends that I would necessarily spill my heart to. So, why would I want to go to a high school reunion?

I encourage you to go but know that if it’s a 10-year reunion some classmates may still be a little immature. (Brag, tease, in-crowd.) By the 25th, life has kicked around everyone enough to make them kinder. (Weight gain, hair loss, job loss, spouse loss, kids who aren’t perfect, and on and on.)

Then, too, if you go your friends still on the fence may go, too.

You’re a class leader!

We had 523 people in my HS graduating class (yes the school was huge). Compounding that is the fact that I was in the honors program in HS which represented less than 10% of our graduating class. I went to our 10th year and 25th year reunion. Hardly anyone showed up for the 10th year reunion but a lot of people showed up for the 25th. I joked with my friends that I had to be introduced to most of my classmates! We had a blast. So, much so that we have been reuniting for Christmas and various other holidays (we have a Memorial Day BBQ coming up) and are planning a class cruise.

I say go and enjoy yourself; you might make some new friends.

Our high school reunion is coming up this Saturday. I have a friend who already paid for the ticket. Right from the start I’ve been planning to attend the reunion. One of my friends was looking forward to this, and was actively posting on our Facebook group regarding the updates. Later on he didn’t seem to be posting on the group. I asked him if he’s going. Told me he wants to, but he’s concerned about who’s going. Among his and our close friends it seems only a couple are going. He didn’t want to be o.p. (out of place) at the reunion, so he’s not going anymore.

I haven’t thought of that, and when he mentioned it, I realized it’s a valid concern. I checked the Fb page and it seems only a few people are going. I even emailed our organizer several weeks ago how many people paid so far.

I haven’t paid yet, as I’m also hesitant on going. Just yesterday my friend who confirmed going asked me again if I’m going. I said again that I want to but haven’t paid, since it seems only a handful are going. Said she already paid so she’s attending.

I kind of torn on whether I should go or not. Only few of my friends are going. On one hand I want to go, on the other hand if I don’t go, I don’t want to regret not going.

I read up on the Net about people’s experiences with school reunions. They’re varied; some say less than 1/3 of their batch showed up, some say their reunions were boring. some say they shouldn’t have attended. Some enjoyed their reunion.

I guess it can’t be helped that reunions could be occasions where one would feel bad about oneself, since you would see many of your classmates all happy and successful, while one is in a not so pleasant situation. I know we have to be thankful and positive for all our blessings, and I am, and I do try to practice that, but no matter what I do, I feel regret for the things that I should’ve done and for the things I’ve done but shouldn’t. Like my friend, I’m concerned about feeling o.p. and probably be bored at the event.

We were thinking that it would be great if one of our friends working abroad could come, but the reunion which was originally scheduled this February didn’t push through when he was still here. That way it would be more fun. I talked to this friend through Skype, and he told me another option is I just show up on the day, and if I think I would enjoy it, then I could pay for the ticket.
I don’t see the need to go unless you want to. You could go without your husband just say he had a conflict in his schedule or prior commitment. There’s no need to go into details. I never went to any of mine and didn’t miss them. I moved on from high school and never looked back.

Hi everyone 👋

Thanks for the advice and the responses.

Sorry to disappoint, but I did not attend the reunion. I actually prayed about this, whether I should go or not, and as the event drew near, I was tending towards not attending. The funny thing is, I don’t feel any regrets, and I almost forgot about it last Saturday.

I enjoyed the day last Saturday. I did some chores, read a book The Practicing Mind, went to the mall, then went to Adoration (the second week in a row). In the afternoon I accompanied my little nephew to the play area, but seeing there were a lot of kids, parents, and babysitters inside, I decided not to go in because it was too crowded. I then decided to attend the anticipated Mass for Pentecost at the chapel nearby. After that we went home and spent some time playing with the other members of the family who just got home from work.

I was having fun, and then remembered that the reunion was that night. By that time the reunion already started, and while I think I could attend or drop by, I felt tired and didn’t feel like going. I sent a text message to my friend who attended to enjoy the night. She replied saying that only a few people came, as expected based from the responses on the FB group. I saw the pictures uploaded on FB; very few people came.

So again, no fireworks or exciting revelations here. This is it. Moreover, several people who said they would attend turned out to be absent.
So,

Did you go? If you did, how was it?

It sounds like you had a lovely Saturday. I’m glad to hear there are no regrets. 👍
