How do they view The Roman Catholic Church?

I am in dialouge with one so it would be of some help. The bigger question is, how much of what this person presents is going to be an accurate representation of their true feelings towards Roman Catholicism?

I used to be an independent Baptist. The church that I attended was not only wary of Roman Catholics but even other types of Baptists. But the particular church that I went to was very strict. I was told once that you could tell a Christian by what he watched on tv, how he spoke, dressed etc.
My neighbor is an Independent Baptist but her church is nowhere near as strict. She sounds almost like a Southern Baptists.

Well, for starters, Jack Chick (California) is an Independent Baptist. Not only an IB, but a “KJV-1611” only type!I am in dialouge with one so it would be of some help. The Conversion Center (North Carolina) is run by Independent Baptists also (though they are not KJV-only, thankfully). Not sure if I can link to eiother of those, since they are virulently anti-Catholic organizations, but you can find them on Google.

The Catholic Church according to many Independent Baptists, and the view that I held myself for many years:
It’s an evil, pagan organization that adds to the Gospel, because they teach that you must work your way to Heaven. They have absolutely no assurance of salvation because when a Catholic is asked if they’re saved, they reply, “I hope so!” They are the Whore of Babylon mentioned in Revelation, and the Pope is the Anti-Christ. They worship Mary, the re-crucify Jesus at every Mass, they don’t know the “true” Gospel, they most likely have never read the Bible, they are lost and need to be brought to a saving knowledge of Christ so they can abandon their pagan ways and become real Christians.
Straight from the mouth of my former Sunday School teacher, “If someone believes everything the Catholic Church teaches, they cannot be saved.”
Hard to believe I’m Catholic now, isn’t it?

My experience is that they don’t accept the baptism of other baptist churches and insist on rebaptism.

This MAY be correct. The reason I say this (I need to check with my husband) is that the Independent Baptist church around the corner from us (where we used to live), did not have a baptistry, and would not borrow one even from the other area IB churches (I knew this because my husband was friends with the pastor there.)
I’m not a Catholic, as you know, I’m not even Christian. But one thing I have noticed in my study of religious history: ALL the churches that broke away from Rome ended up breaking away from each other as well, on and on ad infinitum!

I don’t know about all Independent Baptist Churches but I know that the pastor of the particular church that I went to pressured me to get rebaptized. Apparently the baptism that I received in my family’s Southern Baptist Church did not count.

If you were baptized by immersion in another Baptist church they won’t usually insist on rebaptism. One woman told me that she and her husband were rebaptized because when they were immersed the first time they went face first instead of backwards under the water.
They do not accept infant baptisms as valid, or any baptism that was not by full immersion.
I believe Missionary Baptists will rebaptize if you were not baptized in a Missionary Baptist church.

Everyone? No. They have actually used the letters in Baptists as an acronym for their beliefs The “I” in Baptist stands for “Individual Soul Liberty” which means that you can read the Bible and decide for yourself what God is saying to you individually. You might just ask if your friend’s church says anything at all about the Catholic Church.

He has told me that he is concened for my salvation because I do not “know” I am saved. He also told me to read Foxes Book of Martry’s. After choking the book down I kept silent until he made the comment he did not know what a sacrament was. I asked why he recommened a book that he did not read himself and he got quiet.

If he is open to reading a book which one would you recommend? Or audio? He has asked questions about the laying on of hands and where it is in scripture. Would it be best to give a list of verses? I have though about giving him a audio series by Tim Staples on the papacy.
