My best friend’s parents are going to renew their vows with a “Priest” from the Independent Catholic Church. I just want to make sure I’m telling them the correct information. The Independent Catholic Church is not a true Catholic church and this “Priest” is not a true Priest.

has anyone heard of the Independent Catholic Church?

If this “priest” performs a ceremony (Baptism, Marriage, Holy Communion) it is not valid?

I don’t think there is one “independent catholic church” out there, one here in Pittsburgh was headed by a defrocked Catholic priest (before he passed).

The validity of sacraments may be variable.

As far as you best friend’s parents, I don’t know them, but I suspect they know exactly what the story is with the priest and church they are dealing with.

There are two possibilities. One, the gentleman could be a validly ordained priest who has been laicized and then joined an “independent” Catholic Church. He would then still be a “real” priest but he would have no faculties to celebrate a marriage. He could validly Baptize since anyone can Baptize.

The other possibility is that he was “ordained” by one of the various groups that use the name “Catholic” but are not in communion with the Church. If that’s the case, he would not have valid orders and not be a “real” Catholic priest at all.

Renewal of vows isn’t a Sacrament so it is less problematic than if they were marrying or attending Mass there.
 
I don’t know too much about the “priest” I told her it was fine for a blessing but she wanted to include my Goddaughter in the mass. It’s a long story. My Goddaughter lives with her father and the father is Seventh Day Adventists. The same day her maternal grandparents are renewing their vows. They are also celebrating my Goddaughts 15th bday. This priest said he could give her 1st Holy communion but now my friend says that she is not going to do that. I told her since my Goddaughter was now raised as an Adventists to just have a blessing. Her and her parents really believe this guy is a real priest. I explained to her that he is not a Roman Catholic priest. I don’t know if the parents had a Catholic wedding.
 
Could this be an Ecumenical Catholic Church? I have run into these apostates in Colorado and Washington DC. The male priests may be valid if they were previously ordained in the real Catholic Church. None of the Bishops are valid, they were self ordained. Any priests or priestesses they ordain are invalidly ordained.
 
Renewing one’s wedding vows is not a sacrament so validity is not an issue. “Independent Catholic” is a contradiction in terms. Catholics should limit their association with an “Independent Catholic” church and should refrain from communion there.
