Independent priests?

Usually used to refer to traditionlists priests who are not affiliated with any particular diocese or other jurisdiction.

Many in the traditional movement are basically Tridentine-rite congregationalists.

Actually, I’ve seen more “independent” priests who were of the liberal bent. It’s usually a priest who is acting without faculties who’s somehow in trouble with the Church.

Forget independent priests: we’ve even got independent popes!

www.vaticaninexile.com (“Pope” Michael I aka David Bawden)

www.truecatholic.org (“Pope” Pius XIII aka Lucian Pulvermacher)

Bottom line: stay away from these guys. No matter how Catholic they sound, they’ve been manipulated by the Devil in his never-ending effort to get you away from the One True Faith.

The canonical term for an ‘independent’ priest is vagus.

There used to be a smattering of these since the seventies. Basically they were conscientious objectors to the liturgical reforms.

I suspect however that there will be fewer of them since the Motu Proprio. Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos has made it a priority to reconcile these priests with the hierarchy. Many have died in recent years, and obviously could not create their own replacements.
