As of yet, I have had trouble finding anyone who could explain – both convincingly or concisely – to a protestant or non-believer why anyone should pay any attention to the Index of Forbidden Books. Also, it seems from what I’ve been able to find that the Index is just a sort of guideline to allow people to steer clear of any books with theological misconceptions. However, since not all of the books fall under that category, the explanation is a bit lacking. Also, where can I find a good link to a list of books found on the Index? There seems to be a bit of discrepancy on-line as to which books are and are not on it. Lastly, is it or is it not a sin to read a book on the Index? Thanks for the help!

I thought it was abolished long before Vatican II came along.

My understanding was that it was meant as a pastoral tool. The whole reason we have an authoritative hierarchy is so that catholics can have a reasonable ability to know where to get true teaching materials and, on the flip side, know what materials that CLAIM to be good teaching materials are actually incorrect or even heretical.

Frankly, we could use a bit more of the latter kind of shepherding these days. There are an awful lot of folks that claim the label “catholic” who are advancing causes and ideas utterly incompatible with catholic teaching.

DANG! Now THAT is a complete answer. How’d you KNOW all that?

It was taken from Wikipedia or similar source (but these exact words are in Wikipedia also)… I’m sure (name removed by moderator) just forgot to mention the source:) (it happens)
