so heres my question, how did culture and society become so corrupted. numbers include men, women, religious laity, over decades.

what is society doing wrong, or what was it doing wrong in the western world.

I must ask what you mean by liberalised. We don’t really use those terms here. Liberal here means very conservative 🙂

Let me clarify what I’m advocating. I’m not suggesting that every time a priest says good morning to a kid we need to immediately drag him into the interrogation room while screaming “pedophile!” Obviously there is a danger of overcorrection. We need to be clear-eyed but not paranoid.

My issue with what you seem to be suggesting is that it builds a culture in which the small minority of evil priests can thrive. If we insist on viewing priests as a class above reproach that we must completely trust, we enable malicious actors to prey on us.

I guess what I’m saying is there is a happy medium between complete, fawning trust and paranoia. We can simultaneously recognize that most priests are good men doing a tough job AND recognize that we need to stay alert for the ones who aren’t.

Well, at least we’ve hit bedrock. We just disagree, which is fair enough.

The headline is misleading. He says he will release a list of names of priests who committed similar offenses, not those accused of committing similar offenses.

A list of guilty offenders is reasonable. A published list of those accused is not and could lead to defamation suits.

I’m betting more dioceses will follow suit once they’ve determined the risk of legal liability is pretty low.
I had already been wondering about this. It seems to me better for dioceses to just get it out in the open of their own volition rather than waiting for their state’s Attorney General to be the one to break the story. I can see more dioceses doing this.

Even Kindergarten teachers are discouraged from comforting upset children with anything other than words though. Agree it’s good to the extreme when a child can’t go to an adult and receive a comforting hug.

As in other walks of life, the office, maybe the boyscouts, it appears two people need to be around to keep everything in check.

That is very difficult for some of us as foreigners.
We have to remind ourselves continuously not to touch or hug a child, until we learn it. Nothing. It is kind of an exercise and an effort for those of us who love kids.
I had to apologize a couple of times and was kindly " forgiven" by my friends ,their mothers, around. No big deal, because they knew me and knew it wasn t on purpose…But I tell you,I froze and blushed when I realized
Not only that, but the physical distance for almost everything is something some of us have to learn. Not that I like being on top or in the face of anyone, but your personal space takes " more space " also than what is average in other places
I learnt it. Fortunately!
No problem. It is just different.

fort wayne has been rock solid

unfortunately, fort wayne diocese has to contend with that rogue superpower notre dame
i went to school there so i feel i can be as critical as i want

notre dame has lost her catholic soul

the bishop of fort wayne has been forced to deal with father jenkins & his obama worship and the uber progressive pro-choice culture at ND

I wouldn’t know but accepted it as it is.
It is hard to deny that the opposite comes spountaneuosly when one has grown up in a different place. And of course we find it good and necessary in our interaction with our children.
But I can perfectly understand when it is not the norm and it bothers other people and I respect that. Particularly when it concerns their children.
I imagine they have plenty of hugs at home anyway!

Let us say it is an effort… Kids are adorable ! Whether our own children, nieces ,nephews, grandchildren… We have been blessed to have them around.

You’re right. The diocese often plays up Notre Dame and ignores it’s other University (The University of St. Francis which is much more conservative and orthodox.)

10 characters – I realized I am not supposed to denigrate clergy – I retract my statement.

Yes, that’s possible. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. (I hope for the better!)

I am going to start RCIA soon. Just because the Church is currently going through a crisis does not negate the fact that it is the true Church. Where else would I go?

Welcome James! I am a convert of ten years and I have never regretted it! I am extremely thankful for the Church!!
