There is currently a proposal before the Indiana legislature to inform women seeking an abortion that life begins at conception. What gets me is this:
“To put our religion or faithful beliefs into a statute that’s going to be law, without being able to back it up scientifically, I have real hard questions about doing that,” said Indiana Rep. John Ulmer, a Republican who voted against the bill.
So life beginning at conception isn’t scientific fact, it’s religious doctrine?

Maybe it is a religious doctrine. Maybe it isn’t. I guess that depends on one’s religion. Regardless, it is a scientific fact, and abortion is not a religious issue. It is a human rights issue.

Of course it’s a scientific fact. Every individual of the human species has a beginning and an end. The beginning is at conception. That’s when a new individual of the human species gets its start. From a biological point of view, what would lead one to think otherwise?

I just think it’s funny that they’re treating a scientific fact as a religious doctrine. I guess they can’t teach the part of high school biology anymore that says life begins at conception, as that would constitute a First Amendment violation.

(by the way…I was being sarcastic…I think Mr. Ulmer’s comment was ridiculous)
