Hello Everyone,
I have a question from a non-Catholic friend of mine that I’m not quite sure how to respond to. I’ve looked elsewhere online and on these forums, but I’m afraid I can’t find a specific article on this issue, so any help you guys can give on the matter (info, advice, links, quotes, etc) would be greatly appreciated!
**The question simply is: ** “What is the Church’s stance on indirect support? Let’s say that tax dollars were used for embryotic stem cell research… or if tax dollars were used to allow poor women to have abortions. Would a Catholic be required to not pay taxes? I’m guessing no, but how does the Church address issues like this?”
His question isn’t specifically about “abortion”, but any moral matter that goes against the Church’s teachings. For example, as students at a major public university, some of our tuition dollars went to support homosexual student groups, student groups that urged students to use contraception and passed out free condoms, etc etc…
I’m afraid I didn’t quite know how to answer this. In these particular cases of “indirect support”, what are we Catholics to do? What is the Church’s teachings on how we are to handle such situations?
Thanks in advance for your help!
