JAKARTA, Indonesia — A group of Muslims protesting Playboy’s decision to launch an Indonesian edition of the magazine clashed with police Wednesday and stoned the company’s editorial offices, witnesses said.

No one was injured in the protest involving around 150 members of the Islamic Defenders’ Front, a small group with a history of attacking bars and nightclubs, as well as Western embassies.

The protesters smashed several windows and the door and gate at the magazine’s offices in south Jakarta, witnesses said. Several were seen scuffling with police officers guarding the building.

Playboy’s first local edition in a Muslim country went on sale Friday.

It features no nudity, and its photos of women in undergarments are less risque than in other magazines already for sale in the country.

But many Islamic politicians and preachers have condemned the publication, with most saying that the name of the magazine itself was grounds for the government to ban it.

The magazine is selling well, according to vendors, and threatened mass protests against it have failed to materialize.

A large part of me is right there with the protesters. There are times when I think we Christians ought to have stormed the headquarters of Playboy Magazine and others like it, and burned them to the ground. The problem is we are living in a society that equates license with freedom. They are not the same thing, and not at all what the Founding Fathers had in mind. But, the Enlightenment principles upon which they built America doesn’t differentiate between the two as well as the teachings of the Church they rejected, so we have smut being trotted out as “freedom of expression,” and no way to stop it infesting the whole world. Sad, isn’t it?

While I can agree with your feelings of frustrations I cannot in anyway think that violence in any way by any Christian is the way to alter society’s viewpoint or social conscience. First century Christians were known not for their political activism, but rather for their quiet humility and humble manner.

I think we’ve gone astray as Christians thinking we need our voice heard. I think we should be more quiet.
