I’m sorry, but since the following articles are sourced from an Indonesian online media and no English one found so far, I’ll include quite a lot of it (I have translated the excerpts of both)… Sorry if there’s any linguistic error 🙂

Mother Mary Statue in Eastern Indonesia Collapsed

Kupang, NTT - For a week strong winds knocked down NTT province. Even the statue of Mother Mary, Mother of All Nations which stood sturdily on a hill was fallen as a result. What is this a sign of? The incident happened at 10.30 (GMT+8), Saturday (21/1/2006), on Keli Hill, the village of Nilo, subdistrict of Nita, district of Sikka, NTT.

The 25 meters statue made of bronze was placed at the altitude of 1,600 meters above sea level.

“In the beginning the statue was at an angle, then cracked at the feet, and eventually fell, the hands and crown of the statue touched the ground. The feet part of the statue is still upright on the globe,” explained Sikka’s District Secretary’s Assistant of Development, Henyo Kerong when confirmed by ‘detik.com’ via telephone.

According to him, no one died from the incident. A few members of the dictrict conference already visited the location where the 6 tonnes statue built at the cost of Rp 1 billion fell. “We will think about rehabilitating the statue,” stated him.

However he refused to say if the fall of the statue was a sign of something extraordinary. He predicted, it was caused by faulty technical aspects of construction. “The statue was placed at the peak of the highest hill. Then there is no tree as tall as that statue. Thus when blown by speedy wind nothing would protect it,” described Henyo Kerong.

Besides the statue, he continued, the wind also destroyed 62 houses, and productive plants such as banana trees.

The statue of Mary, Mother of All Nations was not yet a year old. The official finishing ceremony on May, 31 2005 was attended by former President Megawati Soekarnoputri. The Mother Mary statue stood gracefully facing North to the sea with a star on top of her head. Mother Mary with both hands opened stood on a globe circled by a snake eating an apple.

The statue’s location was expected to become a passionists’ center and a devotional pilgrims’ site for Mary, Mother of All Nations.

Mother Mary’s Statue Collapsed, Parishioners Reminded to Stay Alert

Kupang, NTT - The collapse of the statue of Mary, Mother of All Nations in NTT was assumed as a sign of something extraordinary, such as of a disaster or of favor/blessings. Catholic praishioners then reminded to stay alert and keep on praying.

That was the opinion of Father Florens Un Bria, The Head of Justice and Peace Commission, Archdiocese of Kupang when contacted by ‘detik.com’ via telephone, Saturday (21/1/2006).

According to Father Florens, what happened today would not wobble the faith of Catholics to stay believing in Mother Mary as a symbol of Catholics in the world.

That’s a big statue! How sad that it is now broken, especially since it is only one year old. 😦
