How can we know if a prayer or novena has indulgence attached with it? Not all prayers have note like that. I just learned that there’s a partial indulgence in praying Memorare (which is one of my favorite novena prayers). Or do all prayers contain indulgence?

You can learn what prayers have an indulgence by reading the current Manual of Indulgences.

Please note that the number of prayers with a specific indulgence has been reduced in recent years. Also, any prayer card you find with indulgence expressed in days (e.g. Indulgence 300 days) is no longer valid as indulgences aren’t expressed in days now and are simply “plenary” or “partial”.

Even if a prayer does not have a specific indulgence, you may be able to get an indulgence by using it under some provision of the Manual such as the one for “mental prayer”.

Just to clarify, what do you mean mental prayer? Is it praying a prayer silently?

Yes, as the Manual uses the term, it would be a non-recited, silent prayer or silent meditation, reflection, contemplation.

Many of the other indulgences require you to “recite” the prayer, in other words speak it out loud.
