Can someone give me a basic and practical explanation of “indulgences”? By “basic”, I mean something that would make sense to my 9,10 and 12yo children (and me!) and by “practical” I mean something that will help us apply this doctrine to the benefit of our souls, and others’ if that applies.
A little background . . . I am an adult convert, called out of the Lutheran church. I was given a strict Lutheran education with A LOT of misinformation about the Catholic Church. Indulgences was one of the big standards in defense of Luther’s revolt. I think I understand, and certainly accept, the basic idea that indulgences are the result of Christ’s merit and are gifts, not earned, but I know there’s much I’m not getting.
Also, I was counseled recently to “earn plenary indulgences and apply them to my husband for his conversion” . I would love to do this, of course, but I thought indulgences could only be applied to oneself or the holy souls in purgatory.
Then at family prayer time, we read in the introduction to our Lives of the Saints book that we can earn a partial indulgence by praying the prayer of the saint on his/her feast day. I think there must be more to this. I don’t want my children to get the idea that just saying the words of some prayers will merit any benefit. There’s a great difference between, an “I’m sorry you’re upset with me” and “I’m sorry I hurt you”, so I suspect there’s more to gaining indulgences than simply reciting prayers.
I have a notion there’s a goldmine here but just have not found the right shovel to mine the gold yet.
