Indulgences and mortal sin

I’ll ask this question here because the apologists never answer my questions. ( They answered 3 in a whole day yesterday).

So the question is, can I gain indulgences for good works when in a state of mortal sin?

From the information I derived, no. This is not the best doctinal specification, but this is what I found.

Yes. You can obtain partial indulgences, but not plenary indulgences. Partial indulgences only forgive part of temporal punishment (the punishment that consigns you to purgatory), whereas plenary indulgences forgive all of it.
 
According to the explanation in the fisheaters site, in order for a partial or plenary indulgence to be effective, the person needs to be in a state of grace.

Okay, but it’s wrong. Fisheaters is a reputable website, but they do have errant tendencies in many things. Confession and being in a state of absolute grace is only a requirement to receive a plenary indulgence. You do not have to be in a state of grace to receive a partial indulgence, but you do have to have a contrite heart for sins that have gone unconfessed.

To gain any indulgence you must be a Catholic in a state of grace. You must be a Catholic in order to be under the Church’s jurisdiction, and y**ou must be in a state of grace **because apart from God’s grace none of your actions are fundamentally pleasing to God (meritorious). You also must have at least the habitual intention of gaining an indulgence by the act performed.

The requirement for confession to gain a plenary indulgence does not necessarily mean a person is in mortal sin. You can gain a partial if you have venial sin since you are still in the state of grace. For a plenary confession is part of the requirements along with mass, communion. prayers for the pope, and whatever else the specific indulgence requires. If you miss one of those it is a partial but you still need to be in the state of grace. You can’t get to Purgatory if you are in mortal sin so how can you have part of your purgation removed with an indulgence. The indulgence does not remove sin only all or some of the punishment.
 
Can you apply indulgences to yourself?

If a person is in grace, then they may be offered for those in purgatory. This is a good
practise. Masses may also be offered for those in Purgatory. The Idea is that we are
members of one body and have communion with one another to pray for one another.
We may also offer up our everyday sufferings and hardships for those in Purgatory to
lessen their suffering. It has been a teaching that it is easier to suffer for our sins in
this world while we are alive than in the next. The reason being that we are free and
may do it voluntarily and therefore it is of more value in the eyes of God. In the next
world in purgatory, we really do not have a choice of voluntary suffering. This is why
it is important to offer each moring all our actions, sufferings, works, to Jesus willingly
and lovingly so that everything we do becomes a prayer and so fulfills the mandate,
“pray always”. And especially to offer them to God thru the hands of blessed Mary.

Just a thought.
