My grandmother (yes she is Catholic) does not believe in indulgences and I want to convince her they are real. How can I convince her that they are real? She would not listen to me before.

Well, you probably aren’t going to be able to “prove” that indulgences are real, but ask her if she thinks there’s nothing on earth we can do to lessen our time in purgatory. Ask her what she thinks “penance” is.

Matthew 16:19 And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.

I get what that verse, but how can i use it to prove it to her?

Make sure you explain what they actually are while you are at it because most peoples problems with indulgences stem from a misunderstanding of them.

Any other advice would be apreciated.

If she understands the purpose of our penance when we go to confession, then she should understand indulgences. We are simply making up for our sins now instead of later. That is the whole concept of penance. We are doing penance for the damage done by our sins. Whatever we fail to make up for on earth, we make up for in purgatory after we die. Indulgences are simply extra penances we do in order to lessen either our own time in purgatory, or that of a poor soul for whom we offer our prayers. This is also why we pray for deceased members of our families and communities. Prayers are indulgences that can be offered for the poor souls in purgatory.

After all, the meager penance that the priest assigns us in confession isn’t NEARLY enough to make up for the endless damage done by our sins, so indulgences are a way of doing our own penances, if you will, to make up for the sins that our assigned penance doesn’t cover.

Here is a good web site that explains indulgences:
