Indulgences, merits?

Am I correct in assuming that “the faithful” as a condition of merits or indulgences means “Catholic”?
 
If you mean one must be a Catholic to gain an indulgence, yes. Indulgences are under the jurisdiction of the Church, which only has authority to give them to its own members, just as they can only dispense the sacraments (apart from baptism) to their own members.
 
Even if it meant all Christians, for most plenary indugences, you must partake of the Sacrament of Confession and the Eucharist and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father as part of the deal. Most non-Catholics would not do that.

I do wonder about one indulgence though: study of Scriptures. I would think that God has no issue with non-Catholics receiving that one at all.🙂

Do you think it does any good for non-Catholics to pray for the souls in Purgatory?

Maybe I just need to find a way to join the Church to solve these problems! 👍
 
With the rate of inflation What are Indulgences selling for these days? I know the Catholic Church sold indulgences back in the 1530’s I was just wondering if the Church is still selling them today? Raised a lot of money back in the old days. Heck Built a Basilica with some of the doe
What ? Well they must of left that out of their(your) own history books. If you write your own history you can cover up anything you want. If the pesants revolt just shot em and claim the Pope is infaliable. Kinda handy is'nt it ?

Wow, what a massive mis-statement of history. Please mark any and all mistakes and show citations of this correct telling of the story

The Pope decided to re-do St. Peter’s. Anyone who assisted was granted a special blessing that lessened the time in Purgatory (indugence). Many people in Europe could not make the trip to donate time and labor, so the donation of money was accepted under two conditions. First, it had to be a sacrafice. Two, it could not be in place of the regular donation they made ot the Church. In Northern Europe (Germany especially), the Church was under heavy debt. They petitioned Rome to be allowed to keep some of the funds raised to pay the debt. Rome agreed. Now, some of these Bishops decided that they would keep a little more than some. They then hired men to preach about the merits of buying the indulgences from them. This was a clear abuse and was NOT what the Church taught. Luther heard one of these men and that set him off.

As for the “peasant revolt,” I suggest that you read Henry Kissenger’s Diplomacy. It had less to do with the unity of the Church than the power of France.

Non-Catholics can pray for souls in Purgatory. It never hurts. In fact, The Eastern Orthodox and some Jews also pray for the dead.

And eventually we ended up with Protestantism, which has now degraded into a myriad of denominations, which, when I was a practicing Protesant, I thought was very cool - I could pick my theology.

Ya like Calvin and his theology? Head on over to the Presbyterian churches. Change yer mind? Leaning more toward Wesley nowadays? Join the Methodists.

I know I was blessed to be introduced to the true Church - the Catholic Church. I still need to join, but I know she is the true church.

As for historical abuses, were I to reject every organization that had fallen victim to the fragility of human nature, where would I be able to stand?

Enough ranting from me! 😃

According to “Handbook of Indulgences” : norm 20.2–

"Actually to gain indulgences the person must have at least the general intention of doing so…"

Which means the Christian who performs an indulgenced work (i.e. scripture reading) without believing in indulgences (i.e. a typical protestant) **would not gain **the indulgence.
