In the ¨Manual of Indulgences¨ book that I own it says that to gain an indulgence that one must have no attachment to venial sin as well as 3 things that are required:
  1. confession
  2. Communion
  3. Prayer for the intention of the Pope
Does this mean that every time I wish to receive a plenary indulgence I have to first go to confession, receive communion and pray for the intentions of the pope and then say whichever indulgenced prayer I have chosen for that day or days? And does one have to go to confession every time one wishes to gain a ‘plenary indulgence’?

The paragraph’s that are confusing me concerning this in the Manual of Indulgences are the following:
**
2. A single sacramental confession suffices for gaining several plenary indulgences; but Holy Communion must be received and prayer for the intention of the Holy Father must be recited for the gaining of each plenary indulgence.
  1. The three condition conditions may be fulfilled several days before or after the performance of the prescribed work…**
Also, from my understanding if I have gone to confession and received communion but do not say any prayers for the Pope but am still in a state of grace then the indulgence would be partial?

Lastly, can one apply one’s indulgences to say the “Holy Souls” in purgatory instead of for ourselves? I know that from November 1st to November 8th the indulgences go to the Holy Souls but can this be continued of one’s own accord if one wishes for ones indulgences to go towards the holy souls?

I apologize if my questions seem silly but I am trying really hard to grow in my spiritual life and see indulgences as such a great sign of God’s mercy.

Thanks in advance and God bless 🙂

n. 6—A plenary indulgence can be acquired only once a day, except for the provisions contained in n. 18 for those who are on the point of death. A partial indulgence can be acquired more than once a day, unless there is an explicit indication to the contrary.

n. 7—To acquire a plenary indulgence it is necessary to perform the work to which the indulgence is attached and to fulfill three conditions: sacramental confession, Eucharistic Communion and prayer for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff. It is further required that all attachment to sin, even to venial sin, be absent.

If this disposition is in any way less than complete, or if the prescribed three conditions are not fulfilled, the indulgence will be only partial, except for the provisions contained in n.11 for those who are “impeded.”

n. 8—The three conditions may be fulfilled several days before or after the performance of the prescribed work; nevertheless it is fitting that Communion be received and the prayers for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff be said the same day the work is performed.

n. 9—A single sacramental confession suffices for gaining several plenary indulgences, but Communion must be received and prayers for the Supreme Pontiff’s intentions recited for the gaining of each plenary indulgence.

n. 10—The condition of praying for the Supreme Pontiff’s intentions is fully satisfied by reciting one “Our Father” and one “Hail Mary”; nevertheless the individual faithful are free to recite any other prayer according to their own piety and devotion toward the Supreme Pontiff.

***YES IT DOES [within a weeks time] ***

Confession Weekly, Communion daily and prayers for the Indulgence daily or the works fo the indulgences IS MY UNDERSTANDING:o
  1. The three condition conditions may be fulfilled several days before or after the performance of the prescribed work…
Also, from my understanding if I have gone to confession and received communion but do not say any prayers for the Pope but am still in a state of grace then the indulgence would be partial?
I don’t know considering th diference in benefits one would do this:shrug: But your understanding seem TO ME to be in line. ALL one has to say fo our Pope is 1 Hail Mary, 1 Our Father and 1 Glory Be to the Father to qualify for the Plenary In dulgence WITH Confesion and Comunion.
Indulgences can apply to yourself, to the poor souls BUT not to another living person.
I apologize if my questions seem silly but I am trying really hard to grow in my spiritual life and see indulgences as such a great sign of God’s mercy.
