"Dear Friends,

Unhappily I must announce that today’s Tridentine Mass will be the last offered here at San Fernando Mission.

Without a single deviation from our scheduled services, the monthly Tridentine Mass has been offered at San Fernando since May 5, 1983. What was begun at the behest of Timothy Cardinal Manning has stretched over twenty three years.

Though there are ancillary reasons for discontinuing this Mass, the primary rationale is “age.” Three masses on the first Sunday are just too much for the old country priest.

After engaging in much discussion and exploring several alternative proposals, we have concluded that there is no reasonable or workable option. Latin has not been taught in our seminaries for thirty or so years and none of the older priests is able or willing to take on the challenege.

Our numbers have diminished considerably over the years. There were 89 people in October as opposed to an upwards of 350 in the earlier years. There are only about half a dozen who have been with us since the beginning.

We are hoping that many of our communicants, expecially those living in the area, will decide to attend our other two Sunday Masses, at 9 or 10:30 am.
We are extremely grateful to Gerry McGrath and her wonderful choir members who have provided quality Gregorian Chant since 1983. Our servers, all of whom have learned the Latin responses, have been outstanding. Surely we will retain a host of happy and spiritual memories of these eventful years.

Please consider San Fernando Mission as your “second” home and return often. You will always be welcome here at the 17th of California mission.

Sincerely in Dno
Msgr Francis J. Weber
Administrator"

Truly a sad day…

The Norbertine Priests also do the Indult Mass and they have a Monastery in that general area. I would say just on the face of it the Bishop wants it discontinued.
Yeah, I should have mentioned the Norbertine Priests also. I live in San Diego and attend the TLM Mass occasionally which is done by Norbertine priests.

I would tend to agree. Cardinal Mahony probably doesn’t really want the TLM done in his diocese. I don’t know how true this is but I heard second hand from someone that attended the TLM at San Fernando today that the priest told the parishioners to “don’t bother” with their petition to keep the TLM because “the decision has been made” and that “it will not change”.

So do I. I’m sure the deciasion was made at the Bishops level. It has been a sad fact of life that since the indult was issued Cardinal Mahoney has been staunchly against it. He went so far as to say that only those who had been adults at the time the Traditioanl Mass had been the norm would be allowed to assist at them. That was shot down pretty quickly by the Vatican though, and he has been trying to either get rid of it or minimize it ever since.

if only 89 people are participating it seems it is not really wanted in that area, so it does not make much sense to continue. If there was really a groundswell of support numbers would have grown from 350 to 1000 instead of dwindling.

Yeah, but look at how it’s offered. It’s moved around each Sunday to different sites within the L.A. diocese. Cardinal Mahony is making it difficult for those that want to attend the TLM. L.A. is a large city with traffic problems and moving it around makes things difficult. Fortunately, I live in San Diego where the TLM is offered at one place every Sunday. It has grown so much that it was overcrowded and the bishop decided to allow another Mass. So we now have two TLM’s every Sunday here in San Diego.

As one who lives in the LA diocese and attends the TLM, i’d like to second MT19:26’s post. It is a moving Mass, and its hard to gain any real community or following when its shifted around the city. I have only been able to attend a handful of times.

Remember LA is enormous both in population and land area. I live here and have a hard time leaving the immediate 5 sq miles within the week. To simply get to the highwy can take up to 25 minutes due to traffic.

Secondly, why does it seem the FSSP is not involved? It would seem logical if you are trying to genorously allow the Tridentine like the Vatican asked, you’d have traditional societies who focus is to celebrate the Tridentine, involved in some way.

Clearly, the conditions promote the dwindling of the TLM and not the growth. I have been in other dioceses where conditions are just a little better and the TLM seems to flourish. Such as in SD which is about 180 miles south of us.

I received a message from the Archdiocese…they can’t confirm it but would like to so they can remove it from the web page…duh

Monsignor Francis Weber is a wonderful man but I have always wondered what “Dno” (not “Deo”) means in his letters. Any idea?

If they truly wanted to make this successful, they would bring in FSSP or ICKSP and not move the Mass around every week. It is impossible to build a semblance of parish life if the community is a nomadic one.

As a person who loves the Tridentine Mass, I am sure I would also tire of going if there was no stability in it being offered.

I heard about this yesterday and it’s absolutely terrible and it leaves only one TLM withing the city left at the St John Vianney Chapel. I think the main problem with such low attendance is that barely anyone knows about the Tridentine Mass…there is no shortage of Catholics, theres 4 million of them in the archdiocese. At the Church I attended during my childhood to it says “Ave Rex Et Terrae” on the stained glass windows and I had no idea what language it was in, no one ever explained to us what it meant in CCD or anything and I always thought it was just saying something about dinosaurs (because of the “Rex”). I really do pray for a more stable parish soon where the TLM is held everyweek.
