Indult requiems allowed?

Are they allowed for decedents who are Catholic and loved the Latin funeral mass but *not *members or attendees of a “Latin mass community”? Does it make a difference if the funeral director is willing to arrange to fly in a priest from out of town to sing the mass in the local parish church ?

Or is this just totally off base as far as what the indult covers?

This is a matter reserved to the bishop’s discretion. Some indult Latin Mass Communities have permission to offer Mass and confession only, though most seem to offer other sacraments, as well. It depends on what faculties the bishop has given. Membership in an LMC is not relevant, nor is the funeral director’s willingness to facilitate a Tridentine Mass.

From the way your question is worded, it sounds as if the deceased passed away in a diocese where there is no indult Mass at all. This does make it more difficult, but again, it is ultimately up to the bishop.

The person involved is very elderly and gravely ill, but not deceased yet. She lives out of town, but her funeral will be shipped in and held here.

This looks like something which requires advanced planning, considering the permissions required.

That is very wise advice, plan plan plan. I am putting the final touches on A requiem with absolution at the catafalque, for a friend who passed away last week. I have been hindered by my own recent illness and stay in hospital. The situation in my case is this. My friend died, but his family shipped his body back Home. As was to be expected. because he was not native to New Orleans.

So I am having the Requiem in our Parish Church here in N.O.
We have the Tridentine mass every Sunday. And have done "tridentine " requiems before. My biggest problem has been getting enough of our wonderful choir members together (due to the time) to properly chant the “Dies Irae”
The more you can plan ahead the easier it will be on all.
I am blessed because our saintly Archbishop, and wonderful pastor. require no special permissions for the Tridentine liturgy. in all of the Sacraments.
