The title is a paraphrase of something I’ll underline below from the Vatican website.

Bishops have asked the Vatican to clarify Catholic doctrine on this
Synod of Bishops:
Proposition 12: Inspiration and truth in the Bible

The synod proposes that the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith clarify the concepts of “inspiration” and “truth” in the Bible, along with their reciprocal relationship, in order to better understand the teaching of Dei Verbum 11. In particular, it’s necessary to emphasize the specific character of Catholic Biblical hermeneutics in this area.
ncrcafe.org/node/2228

Clarification hasn’t been given yet but in terms of what we know already for “certain”
INSTRUMENTUM LABORIS:
In summary, the following can be said with certainty:

— the charism of inspiration allows God to be the author of the Bible in a way that does not exclude humankind itself from being its true author. In fact, inspiration is different from dictation; it leaves the freedom and personal capacity of the writer in tact, while enlightening and inspiring both;

with regards to what might be inspired in the many parts of Sacred Scripture, inerrancy applies only to “that truth which God wanted put into sacred writings for the sake of salvation” (DV 11);

— in virtue of the charism of inspiration, the Holy Spirit constitutes the books of the Bible as the Word of God and entrusts them to the Church, so that they might be received in the obedience of faith;

— the totality and organic unity of the Canon of Sacred Scripture constitutes the criterion for interpreting the Sacred Book; and

— since the Bible is the Word of God recorded in human language, its interpretation is consonant with literary, philosophic and theological criteria, always subject, however, to the unifying force of faith and the guidance of the Magisterium (13).

the instrumentum laboris is only a working document and so lacks all authority.

This is what the Popes have said on the subject:

“St. Jerome’s teaching on this point serves to confirm and illustrate what our predecessor of happy memory, Leo XIII, declared to be the ancient and traditional belief of the Church touching the absolute immunity of Scripture from error: So far is it from being the case that error can be compatible with inspiration, that, on the contrary, it not only of its very nature precludes the presence of error, but as necessarily excludes it and forbids it as God, the Supreme Truth, necessarily cannot be the Author of error. ” (Pope Benedict XV, Spiritus Paraclitus, n. 16)

“But although these words of our predecessor leave no room for doubt or dispute, it grieves us to find that not only men outside, but even children of the Catholic Church - nay, what is a peculiar sorrow to us, even clerics and professors of sacred learning - who in their own conceit either openly repudiate or at least attack in secret the Church’s teaching on this point.” (Pope Benedict XV, Spiritus Paraclitus, n. 18 )

“Divine inspiration extends to every part of the Bible without the slightest exception, and that no error can occur in the inspired text…” (Pope Benedict XV, Spiritus Paraclitus, n. 21)

“…they put forward again the opinion, already often condemned, which asserts that immunity from error extends only to those parts of the Bible that treat of God or of moral and religious matters.” (Pope Pius XII, Humani Generis, n. 22).

Pope Pius X published a Syllabus of Errors, in which he condemned the idea that “Divine inspiration does not extend to all of Sacred Scriptures so that it renders its parts, each and every one, free from every error.” (Pope Pius X, Lamentabili Sane, n. 11).

“But it is absolutely wrong and forbidden, either to narrow inspiration to certain parts only of Holy Scripture, or to admit that the sacred writer has erred… For all the books which the Church receives as sacred and canonical, are written wholly and entirely, with all their parts, at the dictation of the Holy Spirit; and so far is it from being possible that any error can co-exist with inspiration, that inspiration not only is essentially incompatible with error, but excludes and rejects it as absolutely and necessarily as it is impossible that God Himself, the supreme Truth, can utter that which is not true. This is the ancient and unchanging faith of the Church, solemnly defined in the Councils of Florence and of Trent, and finally confirmed and more expressly formulated by the Council of the Vatican.” (Pope Leo XIII, Providentissimus Deus, n. 20).

The sacred Council of Trent ordained by solemn decree that “the entire books with all their parts, as they have been wont to be read in the Catholic Church and are contained in the old vulgate Latin edition, are to be held sacred and canonical.”[2] In our own time the Vatican Council, with the object of condemning false doctrines regarding inspiration, declared that these same books were to be regarded by the Church as sacred and canonical “not because, having been composed by human industry, they were afterwards approved by her authority, nor merely because they contain revelation without error, but because, having been written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, they have God for their author, and as such were handed down to the Church herself.” When, subsequently, some Catholic writers, in spite of this solemn definition of Catholic doctrine, by which such divine authority is claimed for the “entire books with all their parts” as to secure freedom from any error whatsoever, ventured to restrict the truth of Sacred Scripture solely to matters of faith and morals, and to regard other matters, whether in the domain of physical science or history, as “obiter dicta” and - as they contended - in no wise connected with faith, Our Predecessor of immortal memory, Leo XIII in the Encyclical Letter Providentissimus Deus, published on November 18 in the year 1893, justly and rightly condemned these errors and safe-guarded the studies of the Divine Books by most wise precepts and rules. (Pope Pius XII, Divino Afflante Spiritu, n. 1)

The Bishops were asking about Dei Verbum 11, I suspect abut the part I have bolded and underlined.
  1. Those divinely revealed realities which are contained and presented in sacred Scripture have been committed to writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. For holy mother Church, relying on the belief of the Apostles (see John 20:31; 2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Peter 1:19-21; 3:15-16), holds that the books of both the Old and New Testaments in their entirety, with all their parts, are sacred and canonical because written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, they have God as their author and have been handed on such to the Church herself [1]. In composing the sacred books, God chose men and while employed by Him [2] they made use of their powers and abilities, so that with Him acting in them and through them [3], they, as true authors, consigned to writing everything and only those things which He wanted [4].
Code:
   Therefore since everything asserted by the inspired authors or sacred writers must be held to be asserted by the Holy Spirit, it follows that the books of Scripture must be acknowledged as teaching solidly, faithfully and without error that truth which God wanted put into the sacred writings [5] for the sake of our salvation. Therefore "all Scripture is divinely inspired and has its use for teaching the truth and refuting error, for reformation of manners and discipline in right living, so that the man who belongs to God may be efficient and equipped for good work of every kind" (2 Tim. 3:16-17, Greek text).
Ron, you quote Pope Leo XIII, in Providentissimus Deus, about Scripture being dictated by God. Is this an infallible teaching? AFAIK, it’s not. After all, Dei Verbum goes on to say:
  1. However, since God speaks in sacred Scripture through men in human fashion [6], the interpreter of sacred Scripture, in order to see clearly what God wanted to communicate to us, should carefully investigate what meaning the sacred writers really intended, and what God wanted to manifest by means of their words.
    To search out the intention of the sacred writers, attention should be given, among other things, to “literary norms.” For truth is set forth and expressed differently in texts which are variously historical, prophetic, poetic, or of other forms of discourse. The interpreter must investigate what meaning the sacred writer intended to express and actually expressed in particular circumstances by using contemporary literary forms in accordance with the situation of his own time and culture [7]. For the correct understanding of what the sacred author wanted to assert, due attention must be paid to the customary and characteristic styles of feeling, speaking and narrating which prevailed at the time of the sacred writer, and to the patterns men normally employed at the period in their everyday dealings with one another [8].
    But, since holy Scripture must be read and interpreted in the same spirit in which it was written [9], no less serious attention must be given to the content and unity of the whole Scripture if the meaning of the sacred texts is to be correctly worked out. The living tradition of the whole Church must be taken into account along with the harmony which exists between elements of the faith. It is the task of exegetes to work according to these rules toward a better understanding and explanation of the meaning of sacred Scripture, so that through preparatory study the judgement of the Church may mature. For all of what has been said about the way of interpreting Scripture is subject finally to the judgement of the Church, which carries out the divine commission and ministry of guarding and interpreting the Word of God [10].
God bless us all,

Ruthie

We Catholics already have the truth because only the Catholic Church has the fullness of truth.
Mainstream Protestants have much of the truth but not all of it.
Other groups are sadly lacking in any truths.
Which group do you belong to? I notice from your profile you don’t want to reveal what you are! Why is that?

SCRIPTURE IS TOTALLY (IN ALL IT’S PARTS) WITHOUT ERROR ONCE WE GET TO THE AUTHOR’S INTENDED MEANING-----ALL ITS PARTS!!! BY ALL I DO MEAN ALL HISTORICAL, SCIENTIFIC, ETC…That is the constant infallible (by virtue of the ordinary magisterium) teaching of the Catholic Church.

Yeah! It makes no sense that Scripture be spinkled with error. How are we to know what is error and what is true?

God cannot deceive not be deceived.

The Holy Spirit has been sleeping and has allowed mankind to perpetuate the errors of the Bible for thousands of years. Only now has He inspired us to see the truth. 😦

Bottom line - it is true or it is not. If not then Catholicism is a sham. We have been duped and fooled by some very clever (inspired?) people. :hmmm:

So you are denying the authors (and God) the option of using fiction to teach truth? Even Jesus frequently did that.

You also believe in the three-tiered model of the universe? That mustard seeds grow into mighty trees?

You also disagree with the Dogmatic statement about truth being expressed differently in various forms of writing, not all of which are historic?

AKA - parables and the Bible points them out.
Most of the time the authors pointed it out. We have no idea what Jesus said to introduce the story. Nevertheless, it is clear the fiction is an acceptable method for teaching truth.

We have no idea? Really now.

The disciples approached him and said, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” 11 4 He said to them in reply, "Because knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been granted to you, but to them it has not been granted. 12 To anyone who has, more will be given 5 and he will grow rich; from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 13 6 This is why I speak to them in parables, because ‘they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand.’

Julia

Its not about me, its about what the Church has always taught about this… Also I remind you that the Bible teaces that those who teach the faith will be judged more strictly. I warn you if you make one of these little one’s stumble Christ said it would be better if a millstone be tied around your neck and you cast into the sea .

Im just the Messenger… but I would take that warning to heart.

Ok, there was possibly one time. But then based on our instruction concerning the historical truth of the gospels, the gospel writers freely rearranged sayings and put words in Jesus’ mouth so, as I said, who knows?

I was taught in the church and by the Church.If you have problems with modern exegesis you better talk to the Vatican.Benedict16 being a biblical scholar, uses the methods himself. If you disagree with these methods I suggest you call the Vatican send a note into the Papal Apartments and tell that guy with the white clothes and white beanie to knock it off! You can easily verify what I say by reading His Holiness’s book “in the Beginning”. As for leading people astray - I’ve stopped people from being enticed into Jehovah’s witnesses , brought, people back into the church and aided them in their spiritual journey.These are my Bona fides. What’s yours?
You use the word 'Messenger" with a capital letter. Does that mean you’re an angel!😃
