Hi. I’m in the military and poor. Hah, now we’ve got that out of the way.

My wife and GB (Goober Grape, aka Infant Son)went back to her home town for some family reasons, and I’ve got a week until she gets back. I miss her like crazy! I’ve always tried to love my wife as best as I could, but I want to do something really nice for her.

What can I do for her that doesn’t cost too much?! Any good stories out there?

Clean the house and make some casseroles or lasange or something and stick it in the freezer. I would positively swoon if my DH did this for me while I was away! 👍
ETA: what a nice husband you are for wanting to do something special for your wife! She’s a lucky gal

This is such a nice thread!

Here are some inexpensive, but very thoughtful ideas that perhaps your wife might like:
  1. breakfast in bed
  2. bubble bath with rose petals
  3. bake her something special, one of her fave cookies or something
  4. compile a picnic basket, and have a living room picnic with a nice bottle of wine (if she likes that, sparkling water will do just fine too!🙂 )
  5. rent a romantic chick movie…lol, and light up the room with candles
  6. manicure/pedicure gift certificate–those are not that expensive at all
  7. buy her a book of beautiful love poems
All kinds of ideas…I’m filled with 'em! 😛 Have a wonderful time–God bless!

While keeping the house clean should go without saying, what about a poem? Write something about how you miss her. That just requires a piece of paper and some words ;).

What women most want is to know that you’re thinking of them. Women love thoughtful gifts. So, it would be easier to advise you if we knew a little bit about your wife.

One really thoughtful thing you could do is put together a little movie of your family photos with a favorite song as the background. I’m fortunate that my computer came with media software that made doing that a really easy thing to do, as well as being totally free. Are you tech savvy at all?

Oooh, what a fun question! There are a million little things you can do. I don’t know your wife, but I’d love for any of the following to be done for me:

Write her a little note telling her how much you love her and tuck it away somewhere she won’t notice right away. Buy flowers and have them sitting on the dining room table when she comes home. Buy her favorite chocolate/candy, wrap it with a ribbon and stash it in the cupboard. Clean the house (laundry, bathroom, vacuum, etc). Get her a gift certificate to get a manicure or pedicure with the understanding that you’ll stay home with GB while she gets an hour or so to herself.

I could probably think of others, but I hope those get you started thinking about what your DW might like best!

Great ideas!

You could also buy her a thoughtful Christmas ornament…that she will treasure forever… DH has done this in years past, and I just love placing them on the tree year after year…knowing he picked something special just for me…

lol, when my DH does something nice, I always think he feels guilty about something!! 😃

too bad it’s winter, he would pick me flowers, sagebrush, whatever he could find as a “redneck bouquet” kinda thing, during the summer, on his way home from work. It was free and sweet!

He buys me chocolate sometimes too, if he’s trying to butter me up about something… 😉

do the maintenance on her car, get the oil changed, rotate the tires, all that guy stuff so she always knows it is running right. if you don’t want to do it take it to that 30 minute place where they check everything and fill it with oil.

go around the house while she is gone and fix all that stuff that has been bothering her–leaky faucets, burned out bulbs, squeaky doors, loose hinges and handles and drawer pulls, holes in the wall etc.

have the carpets cleaned–rent the machine if you need to save money. follow the directions, buy the proper cleanser for the machine, vacuum before, and after with a clean bag.

you can tell I’ve been married a lot longer than these gals who are looking for the romantic stuff

where is Bama when you need him?

Good suggestions ladies. I especially like the hidden love note thing. Excellent, she’d like that.

I’m a slob and I plan to do all my cleaning saturday morning. Plus I’m ignorant as how to clean, I was puzzled at getting crumbs off of a table cloth, I kept grinding them in- I guess I’ll just have to wash it later.

She flies in at 3. 😛 So the house cleaning goes without saying!

tip to make it easier: clean as you go, and don’t make messes in the first place. if you leave it till the last minute you will be frazzled

Write her a love letter telling her how much you miss her.

I still remember every letter my husband wrote me… he hates writing so it made it even more special knowing he went to all that effort!

That and chocolate and flowers are always good!

and don’t leave the cleaning until the last minute!!! 😉

start now and then don’t use the areas/things you’ve already cleaned:thumbsup:

And I totally second the love notes and poems idea. There is just something about seeing those feelings in writing that melts a woman’s heart.

And it is totally free (assuming you have some paper and a pen?..if not, get thyself to a dollar storeth:D)

Once when I went away on a trip, I came home to find

WELCOME HOME KAGE

on the living room wall. He used the computer to print out one huge letter on each sheet of paper, and taped them up into a big display. I cried.

Aww! Thanks for your service, by the way. You’re a hero to all of us!

But probably especially to your wife.

The suggestions here are great.

How about getting index cards and making “coupons” for her for things you will do for her.

Backrubs. Footrubs. Garbage detail. Movie of her choice, even a chick-flick. Babysit while she does a girls’ night out with her friends. Dinner on you. Making the bed. Vacuuming coupon, or clean the bathroom.

You probably get the gist.

Oh, and save one card for “Coupon for one kiss.”

Make it a good one! 👍

mschrank,

how to clean a kitchen:

put all foods away, closing each container properly

get an empty garbage pail nearby. go around the room tossing out all wrappers and packages. line up recyclables by the sink.

rinse recyclables and sort and put them in keepers

stack up all dirty pots and pans on stove
stack up all dirty dishes on counter top, alongside sink-- even the ones in the sink-- take them out and stack them. if you run out of room, stack them on the table.

fill a sink of hot soapy water.
if you have a second sink, fill it with clear hot water.

where is your dish rack? do you have a second counter to set the dishrack? wipe that counter clean and put out the dish rack.

roll up the table cloth and shake it outside. if it’s stained (betcha it is) then put it in the laundry.

wash the dishes, doing silverware, then cups, then dishes. rinse them and put them in the dish rack. if you run out of room in the dish rack, dry the clean ones and put them away.

make fresh dish water and fresh rinse water as needed. dry all dishes, put them away.

for the pots, you’ll probably need something scrubby-- brillo pads or ajax powder. scrub pots, rinse them and put them away.

scrub stove top and walls around stove. wipe counters and table. wipe dowmn whatever stuff you have on the counters-- toaster, microwave (interior, too) etc. if you have a spray cleaner like lysol, that will work. if not a little bleach or dish soap in a bucket with water will be fine. (careful with the bleach.)

do you have kitchen mats or rugs? roll them up and shake them outside. if they’re still a mess, toss them in the laundry (they DON’T get put in the same was as the tablecloth.)

sweep the floor or vaccuum. move the chairs and table to one side, then to another.

fill a bucket with whatever you have for floor cleaning, don’t use too much. do you mop? then mop. or just get on your hands and knees to wipe with rags.

when you’re done, empty bucket, toss rags in the laundry. put the table and chairs back. put rugs back if they’re clean and the floor is dry.

when everything else is done, scrub the sinks and surrounding area. dry.

do the laundry. maybe your wife deosn’t want the table cloth dried in the drier. stain stick it. it can go in the washer with other light weight colored clothes, but not too many. and not too much detergent. hang it to dry.

then wash the rugs if they needed it. if they are rubber-backed, they should be hung dry, too.

when the cloth and rugs are dry, put them back. keep the kitchen clean every time you use it. after you worked like this, you’ll WANT to keep it clean.

good luck.

Welll…

On Saturday I gave DH two coupons and told him exactly what to buy me and to wrap it, lol.

One coupon was for a free set of pearl earrings from a jewelry store at the mall and another was for $10 off any purchase (no minimum) at a clothing store.

So I am getting two free Christmas gifts… 😃

After doing all that cleaning and some cooking and maintenance and love poems and finding little tidbits to suit her fancy such as small chocolates (Dove is not expensive), I would set up either a path for her to find them, or hide them in places she might go, such as on her pillow or on the kitchen counter. I like surprises.

LOL oh my! Pick the cloth up by the corners, so that non of the crumbs fall out, and then carry it outside and shake it! hehehe you better not wait til the last minute! 😉 Good luck!
