Is it against God’s word and the Catholic Church for a married woman to get a sperm donor if her husband does not product sperm on his on?

We’re both unsure, if it’s playing God’s will? But we do want to have a child. We’ve been to doctors throughout the states and there is nothing left other than a spent donor.

Using a sperm donor goes against Catholic teaching. As a Catholic-turned-Atheist, I would highly recommend considering adoption, as there are just so many babies and children in need of homes at the moment.

However, you have to decide which avenue toward parenthood best suits you and your wife.

My wife and I struggled with infertility as well. A sperm donor is not an option. Artificial insemination / an IUI of your husband’s own sperm is a bit of a gray, undefined area of mixed opinion that you can explore Catholic teaching on, per my response from the National Catholic Bioethics Center, and you can weigh your conscious on that after exploring Catholic teaching, though my wife and I ended up not doing it for a myriad of reasons (including cost) . That may or may not be an option for your type of infertility. But I would research that further and not just take my word on it. Adoption is also an option.

We don’t have an absolute right to bear children at any cost, and the rights of the child being conceived must also be respected in the act of conception. Infertility is a heavy cross on both wife and husband. I’ll include you in my prayers.

Separating the marital act from conception, making the gamates into commodities to be bought or sold or traded, not part of God’s plan.

The masturbatory act required to obtain the sperm is a grave sin as well.

As referenced above, the USCCB readings, the NCBC are good resources. The PPVI Institute is another important resource

Yes. It is gravely wrong to use heterologous artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization.

See the Church documents Donum Vitae and Dignitas Personae.
