In the Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph 2379 says that," The Gospel shows that physical sterility is not an absolute evil. Spouses who still suffer from infertility after exhausting legitimate medical procedures should unite themselves with the Lord’s Cross, the source of all spiritual fecundity." Ok what would be considered "legitimate medical procedures. Our doctor wants my husband to have a sperm count done. But is that morally wrong to have this procedure done, because he has to masturbate to get the sperm. Because it is a sin against chastity.

The Encyclical Donum Vitae discusses the technologies that are permissible and not permissible.

www.popepaulvi.com is another source of information. The Pope Paul VI Institute is a group of doctors that adhere to Catholic teaching and specifically work with couples suffering infertility.

It is morally persmissable for semen to be collected in a perforated condom during sexual intercourse. Discuss this with your doctor-- doctors are aware of this option, and can give you the special condom (one untreated with any lubricant or spermicide) or you can obtain one at a pharmacy. You perforate the condom with a sterile needle.

You are correct that collecting semen via masterbation is morally unacceptable.
