I attend Mass regularly at my local parish, but have gone to confession in a parish in a nearby city that has traditional confession rooms with a screen or a chair that sits in front of the priest to offer face to face confession. I prefer doing confessions in the other parish because of that reason.

I was going to go to confession at my local parish one day during my lunch break from work, the local parish does not have a traditional confessional. Father’s office is the confessional. The way father’s office is setup has two entrances, there’s one in the Narthex/Lobby area that is open, and there’s one in the Nave, a clear door that says confessional on it, but both entrances go into his office, he leaves the door in the Narthex open and his desk is right there, you can visibly see him sitting there from the Nathex and can hear him if your standing in the lobby.

He sits in his office in street clothes, a regular tshirt and black slacks, and he usually has his little pomeranian relaxing under the desk who likes to greet visitors who come into his office. No stole or anything. Usually if someone wants to walk in and talk to they can walk in through the lobby because he leaves that door open, if you want to do confession you have to enter through the “confessional” door in the Nave, where the line for confession forms. Usually people will walk in to ask questions as he leaves the lobby door open. You sit at his desk and confess, there’s no screen option available.

I ended up leaving because my hour lunch was almost up, as I left the Nave and walked out into the lobby to leave, I was shocked to see the door to his office out there was left open while a young man was in there at his desk confessing. I figured he would have closed the door in the lobby area as people came in to confess but he leaves it open all the time.

The whole confession process seems a bit informal to me, it’s a smaller church so I can understand them using Father’s office as a confessional, and maybe not investing in a privacy screen, but him being in street clothes and leaving the door in the lobby area open rubs me the wrong way. Am I wrong in feeling that way? Like I said I ended waiting until the weekend to do confession at a different parish, but I just didn’t feel like the way they handle confession was very formal, in my opinion.

I can see this being a prudential call by the priest. Some people might find a “formal” confession intimidating, and stay away. He might be trying to relax people who haven’t gone to confession in a long time and might be nervous. On the other hand, I can see how it would look like he’s not taking it seriously or giving it the reverence it deserves as a sacrament.

If you do decide to go to confession in his office, you’d certainly be within your rights to say, “Hey Father, mind if I close the lobby door?”

Two words:

Safe Environment.
If he is hearing a confession and it’s not in a traditional confessional, one or more of the persons have to be readily visible. For both of their person’s protection.

What he wears has no bearing on the validity of the Sacrament.
Be at peace.

I want to say that they are suppose to have both options available. At least i was told that by a member of clergy who studies Canon Law.

True, and if the person is uncomfortable, he may ask the priest to move to the regular confessional please.
Every priest I know would accommodate this request.

But at our parish there is no traditional confessional, it’s a really small church

I’m an oddity, as I prefer to do confession face-to-face anyway(Though I rarely do anymore). I don’t know what to tell you

.
The entrance on the Nave side that says “confessional” is a clear door, you can see right into his office and his desk, but the lobby side entrance is a solid door and is left open

I think disagreeing with the priest in this context is perfectly legitimate.

I also think that it’s important to keep in mind that you and I may not really have much business trying to change such a priest. Out of respect for the priest, I think it’s best to leave him alone until it really becomes sincerely necessary to do otherwise. We all want to speak up; very few of us are actually called to do so, IMO.

If it bothers you, try to go elsewhere, as you say you do. But being overly focused on this is just a distraction.

I remember running up to my beloved Pastor in the Church parking lot asking for him to hear my confession.

We walked around the grounds of our Church and school … best confession I’ve ever had, still remember it to this day and that was in the early 1970s - 🙂

Well, there you go.

You could ask to close the lobby door while you confess. Instead of worrying about trivial things like his clothing, think of the Catholics who do not have regular access to a priest at all, and be thankful that you do. I am fortunate enough to be within a mile and a half of three parishes that have daily Mass morning, noon, and evening. A traditional Latin Mass is ten miles away. I often reflect on how lucky I am.

Outstanding ! 👍

I think the lack of a screen is an issue. While I prefer face-to-face myself, canon law is clear that there must be a fixed screen in the Latin Rite. Your parish might have some legitimate difficulties with that, but I’d think it would be a priority to make confession with a screen available. Your major concern seems to be the lack of formality involved, but that doesn’t bother me at all. I’ve confessed in a number of “unusual” places - a priest’s home, his office, a park bench, walking around the parking lot. I have a slight preference for confession in the church, with a stole, etc. but I know that it doesn’t make the slightest difference in the validity or importance of the sacrament.

One thing that struck me while reading your posts is the remarkable accessibility of your priest to his parishioners. That is quite a blessing in this day and age when priests are so busy and can sometimes be impossible to access without going through a gatekeeper secretary.

Apparently, where I am, the confessional boxes were removed because of case 50, Royal Commission, one ongoing change.

Reconcilliation is a room with double doors that have big glass windows. There is a screen with a kneeler, or a chair face to face. Its a nice room, stained glass window, candles, etc. Unfortunately , I think, parishoners now Priest shop. Who is talking confessions today. Everyone can see which Priest is in, and who is in confession.
