Hi, I have a non-Catholic, Christian friend who has a lot of questions about Catholicism. I think it is possible that God is leading her towards the Church. The problem is that I feel like if I try to answer her questions I might do it wrong. So I’m wondering what would be the best advide to give her? Should I get a good book and recommend she read it? Or give her a link to Catholic Answers and let her search for herself? A couple of the things she has asked me about are where it says in the Catechism that non-Christians can be saved if they lead good lives and also that she believes that Mary cannot hear her prayers and that it says in the Bible that there is only one Mediator between us and God and that is Jesus. She is a good Christian, but I am praying that she will find the fullness of truth within the Catholic Church.

Thanks in advance! 🙂 And btw, maybe I should ask this question in the “Ask an Apologist” section??

Jimmy Akin deals with mediation in his book “The Salvation Controversy” if I remember right. There are also articles on here about it. Do a search.

For the possibility of salvation for non-Catholics, point her to catechism paragraph 847. You can search the catechism online at www.scborromeo.org/ccc.htm .

Mary hearing our prayers and interceding has to do with the communion of saints.

Have you taken her to a Mass? That’s usually the first place to start.
where it says in the Catechism that non-Christians can be saved if they lead good lives
That’s not what the Church teaches, although Church teaching is often misconstrued in this way. The Church teaches (through a doctrine called invincible ignorance) that it is POSSIBLE (not guaranteed, or not even likely) that a person of virtue may be saved apart from Christian Baptism. The Church has no idea on what terms this could be accomplished, or if it is common or rare, or even if anyone has ever accomplished it. Maybe only five people have ever accomplished it (or maybe nobody has). Because of this uncertainty, the Church always advocates Christian Baptism (which is 100% guaranteed effective).
she believes that Mary cannot hear her prayers
Fine. No Catholic is ever required to pray to any Saint. These are private devotions, and there are lots of those to choose from (or not - they are not required).
Bible that there is only one Mediator between us and God and that is Jesus
She’s right. That’s also what the Church teaches. But we can pray for one another (and we believe the Saints can pray for us as well - we can’t pray for them because they have no need of our prayers).

By the way, to Pre-empt another one, type in Jesus head of the Church to the online catechism. Jesus is the ultimate head of th Church, but because the Church is a visible society and knowing He would return to heaven He made Peter the leader and visible head of the Church allowing Peter to share in His governing power - in a nutshell.

You could always send her here. We have plenty of people able to answer questions.

All great advice, thanks guys! I had kind of hoped there might be one specific book that would be good but I think that most things if not all can be answered on this site. 🙂
