Can anyone tell me about Our Lady of the Desert School in Yucca Valley, CA? Is it in communion with Rome? What are their relations with the Papacy? Do they recognize the spiritual authority of the local bishop?

There are definitely some warning signs on their website (e.g., “formed in 1983 by a group of militant Catholic laymen”). My advice would be to call the Diocese of San Bernardino and ask. If, as may happen, you get an “I’m not sure, we’d have to check into that,” then I’d call directly the Vicar for the Lower Desert Vicariate, the Very Rev. Eliseo Lucas, whose phone number is on this page and whose vicariate covers Yucca Valley.
