Another thread got me thinking about the proper prayers of the Roman Missal compiled by Pius V and the revisions of it up to 1962.

I realized that I know very little about the origins of these prayers, aside from the fact that Aquinas composed the prayers for Corpus Christi. I’d like to know out who composed which specific prayers when. (Insofar as the information has not been lost, of course.)

There seems to be an awful lot of literature on the Mass per se, but can anyone recommend some sources of information on the propers only, to the extent that their composition and/or compilation is known?

Are you asking about the prayers of the Ordinary, or the propers specifically ?

Perhaps AJV will see this and have a source of info.

Thanks for that link. That little monograph is fascinating in its own right, and I saved a copy for future reading.

I was inquiring more specifically about the individual proper prayers. Who, for example, wrote the Collect for the feast of the Holy Family this coming Sunday, or the Secret, and so on? When was that particular prayer added to the Missal, under Pius V, or later?

Many of the prayers as you know are not taken directly from the Scriptures.
