To treat a coldsore, my mom put some disinfecting thing and “mercuro” which contains mercury. she did this 2x.

So, I probably ingested some while drinking , eating, rubbing lips, etc…

im assuming they were small to medium sized amounts, but is this bad?
and is not doing anything a sin?

mercuro is 21-27% mercury, and im afraid that i might be sinning if I don’t do something

sorry, & thanks

How old is that stuff? It has not been available for sale for YEARS!

Sounds like it is time to clean out the old medicine cabinet.

What do you believe to be sinful in the doing or not doing? What commandment do you believe you have broken?

I don’t quite understand what you believe to be sinful in treating a cold sore?

And, what exactly is the “something” you think you should “do”?

does it contain mercury salts? because that’s the kind of mercury that did cause problems.

I would advise your mom to not do it again, if you find it is dangerous. Small amounts of mercury woun’t really hurt anyone but the elderly, the young and pregnant women.

Mercurochrome

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merbromin

"Merbromin (marketed as Mercurochrome, Merbromine, Sodium mercurescein, Asceptichrome, Supercrome, Brocasept and Cinfacromin) :

is a topical antiseptic used for minor cuts and scrapes.
Merbromin is an organomercuric disodium salt compound and a fluorescein.

It is readily available in most countries but no longer sold in the United States because of its mercury content.

Ok… taking anything with mercury in it is bad for your health but I don’t get why it would be a sin.

Ok, before everyone panic’s the OP, let’s be clear:

(a) There are over the counter medicines that use “mecuro” or “mecurochrome” in the name in the US that do not contain mercury (which was banned in 1998).

(b) Real mecurochrome is still available internationally, but contains so little that you’d have to drink gallons of the stuff to be harmful.

(c) The question was about the *morality *of “not doing something” and the OP has not yet clarified what it is s/he believes s/he should “do” and what sin has been committed.

How old is that stuff? It has not been available for sale for YEARS!

  1. The OPs parents are from a different country.
  2. I think the OP is concerned about being a sin due to there being self harm through omission. OP - I think you are overthinking your decision.
  3. We cannot give medical advice on CAF but what you should do is call your primary care physician and ask his/her nurse what they think and if you should come in and they will tell you what to do and you will not have to worry.

“1) The OPs parents are from a different country.”

Yes, but the information on the little bottle thing labeled “Mercuro” or something, is in english (it’s a red liquid, says it disinfects stuff). So I guess it was bought before it was banned, what was it? 1998?

(Hopefully there isn’t an expiration on that thing! 12 years, yikes!)

“2) I think the OP is concerned about being a sin due to there being** self harm through omission**. OP - I think you are overthinking your decision.”

That’s exactly it! Would I be doing myself harm, and thus sinning, by not doing anything about it. (ingesting some mercury).

"3) We cannot give medical advice on CAF but what you should do is call your primary care physician and ask his/her nurse what they think and if you should come in and they will tell you what to do and you will not have to worry. "

I don’t think I can do that, only 15 yrs old, parents probably wouldn’t be happy about it. My mom said it was OKay but I’m not sure. She told me not to worry.

I would stop taking the stuff, and see a doctor ASAP (as soon as possible)

AND

Be on the lookout for this:

Common symptoms of mercury poisoning include peripheral neuropathy (presenting as paresthesia or itching, burning or pain), skin discoloration (pink cheeks, fingertips and toes), swelling, and desquamation (shedding of skin).

Because mercury blocks the degradation pathway of catecholamines, epinephrine excess causes profuse sweating, tachycardia (persistently faster-than-normal heart beat), increased salivation, and hypertension (high blood pressure). Mercury is thought to inactivate S-adenosyl-methionine, which is necessary for catecholamine catabolism by catechol-o-methyl transferase.

Affected children may show red cheeks, nose and lips, loss of hair, teeth, and nails, transient rashes, hypotonia (muscle weakness), and increased sensitivity to light. Other symptoms may include kidney disfunction (e.g. Fanconi syndrome) or neuropsychiatric symptoms such as emotional lability, memory impairment, or insomnia.

Thus, the clinical presentation may resemble pheochromocytoma or Kawasaki disease.

An example of desquamation of the hand of a child with severe mercury poisoning acquired by handling elemental mercury is this photograph in Horowitz, et al. (2002).[3]

if your eyes get yellow or jaundiced, it may be something with your liver.
also if you notice a bluish-gray discoloration along the gum-line, even partially, this a tell-tale sign youve got it.

Also, I’m not trying to freak you out or anything (and I apologize if I have)…just wanting you to be aware so as to take care of yourself. 👍

Hey this looks similar to it. Maybe this is it.

I would ask them to take me to a doctor. If they wont, then I would ask a neighbor or close friend. IF none of those, then Id see what CPS could do, as by that point it would become an issue of whether or not neglect is/has occured.

In this case I would imagine it may be worth looking into, as keeping a person from recieving necessary medical care **for a legitimate reason ** is certainly worthy of speculation.

Anyway, I hope you get checked and everything turns out ok.

I’m not sure if I need a doctor. I don’t think I injested large amounts.
My lips were (and are) dry because of a fever, plus, I bit on them so there all cut up to. When I told mom about the cold sore she disinfected with a clear liquid,( I don’t think it was alcohol though), then put on the Merbromin / Mercurochrome. Then it got dry, and It was on my lips most of the day

( It doesn’t absorb through skin does it? Would that mean I have a higher absorption than I thought?)

. She did it a 2nd time too. I only got it off my mouth recently. (around 7PM East)

I’ve had this done to other cold sores, and I didn’t notice anything bad.

My parents would probably think Im over reacting, I have OCD and had (and might still have) scrupulousity. But what if this is a genuine health concern.

If I stood by and did NOTHING, would i be sinning of ommission? Mortal or Venial?

Please help 😦

Oh, for heaven’s sake, calm down. Child protective services?!?!

OP, here is the telephone number for the poison control centers in the USA - 1-800-222-1222. Take the bottle of mercurochrome so you can give them the information from it and call the number and ask what, if any, harm may have been done. They will advise you on a course of action.

Don’t worry - your mother’s probably right.

The product is “Mecruocrome”, and it does not, and never has, contained Mercury.

That was a brand name for an alcohol disinfectant. It had a red dye in it, so you would know where it had been applied.

Don’t worry about it.

I don’t know if it’s still available here in Australia, but my our family used the stuff fairly frequently when I was a young’un. No harm, no foul.

As advised, check with the poisons information centre.

But it says on the bottle that it has 21-27% mercury 🤷
