Where was the Church from 100 A.D. to the 1500s?

Didn’t Jesus say He wanted the Church to be one? Didn’t He also say that a people divided against themselves shall not stand?

Luke 11:17
But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth.

Have you ever read the Church Fathers? If so, why do you still deny the Catholic Church, despite the early Church teachings being in line with many modern Catholic teachings that Protestants do not uphold?

Rome, Antioch, Jerusalem, etc. Where two or more are gathered in my name, there I shall be also.
The divisions and schisms within His Church are evidence of human sin. As brothers and sisters in Christ, we all have an obligation to pray and work for unity.
Of course, brow beating each other will not serve that end.

Is it you arent listening? I dont think so, it is that you believe that this logic is impecible and therefore we all should see the brillance of your polemic and fall down and worship at the feet of Rome.

For someone who claims to be a Christian, it seems you have much anger and hate in you. 😦
 
My brilliance aside (thank you), all I ask is that the Holy Spirit guide all of us to truth. I think it’s obvious which truth I hold as truth. May God keep us all in that truth, His Truth.

I pray this prayer as well. I think this is a good prayer for all of us to pray, regardless of our religious affiliation.

I think hearts own, when the love of Christ is demonstrated. Tantum, you have demonstrated His love with your prayer.

To both Catholics and non-Catholics who speak outside Christian charity; I will say, it is difficult to have an open heart, when someone comes at you with a hammer. :ouch:

From looking at the responses you received, I get the feeling that this has been discussed ad nauseum around here before. I also suspect that what you are asking are what are known as leading questions - you have already decided what the answer should be and are prepared to make mincemeat out of any fool that dares answer. Well, here I am.🙂 I’m new around here too and frankly my answers are probably not very good, but out of friendship (hoped for, anyway!🙂 perhaps I can make some kind of an intelligible response.

Yes, Jesus wants the Church to be One. Do you think God the Father will not, or is not answering His Son’s prayer? Do you think that unity is necessarily something we are capable of understanding? Do you think a mockery of the unity that He intends, for example one organizational structure on earth that disagrees about everything, is His will? I am NOT calling the (Roman) Catholic Church that mockery in raising the question. God promised Abraham a son. Abraham produced Ishmael because “God was late”. Shall we have an Ishmael type unity in the flesh, or wait for God to produce it in the Spirit, or is it here unrecognized?

The Church has always been here from 100 AD to 1500 AD. I don’t know of anyone who claims it did not exist.

The Church Fathers were a divided bunch and not as united as some make them out to be. There is so much, and some church fathers are self-contradictory, and they did not address the issues that divide us today so much as they addressed the issues of their day, so that it is hard, I think, to not cherry-pick them in establishing theological positions they held. And they held things that we (Protestants) do agree with, such as the Trinity, as well as things we all agree on (such as Christ being really present, somehow, in the Eucharist) that there is disagreement on, and somethings we disagree on (Augustine, I am told, both believed in purgatory, which makes him a Catholic, and sovereign election, which makes him a Calvinist).

But I am no expert. I know little. I would, however, like to be your friend in this discussion.🙂

Actually, I have no way to defend the questions. I have no idea about them, and that’s why I asked them. I think people assume too much. It’s impossible to ask a dang question anymore without getting garbage for it. Too much hate on this site, too much. 😦

Let me restate, I am NOT Roman Catholic. I’m Lutheran.

Believe me, I understand the feeling. It is so frustrating when people take what you say the wrong way! So very, very, frustrating! And it makes it so much harder not to take what they say back to you the wrong way!

Thanks Anna. I thought Robert asked a very good question. As a fellow “evangelical Catholic”, it is one I ask myself. But the thread seemed to immediately change tones.
