Inquiring in the Church

I have attended a parish in my area for the purpose of preparing to “inquire” in the church, unfortunately I am not ready to attend RCIA, nonetheless I want to learn from a source or sources about the church as I prepare in the future. Beyond further attendance in the parish, which I find awkward because I am not a member – I am looking for recommendations on the direction I should go?:confused:

I would also suggest you get yourself a copy of the Cathecism of the Catholic Church (CCC). This book has everything you need to know.

Also, get yourself a Doury-Rheims Bible. You could get a RSV-Catholic Edition or the NAB, also. And a habit you should look into doing when you plan on reading/ purchasing any books on the Doctrines of the Catholic Church is to make sure that those books have the Nihil Obstat and Imperatur. These are always on the backside of the title page, and ensure that the contents within are free of doctrinal mistakes and that the contents are in keeping with the teachings of Rome.

Also, a really good book for sparking your interest in Catholicism would be “Rome, Sweet Home” by Scott Hahn. Dr. Scott Hahn was a Presbyterian minister would converted to Catholicism.

Hey Windsorco!

That’s great you feel led to investigate into the Catholic faith! What led you to have that desire?

Do you think you’re not quiet ready for RCIA because you may feel pressure to become Catholic just because you attended the classes? I can sort of sympathize with that, but hopefully you won’t feel that pressure. RCIA is great for folks like you who are inquiring with any level of interest.

But since you’ve got some interest already, maybe you should read a book or something.

I recommend “Catholicism for Dummies.” Don’t laugh, I’m serious! One of the main reasons I got a lot out of RCIA was because I read that book, it was excellent.

Besides that, maybe the Compendium to the Catechism. Or reading/starting your own threads here. But reading a book will probably be more peaceful and focused.

Yet I can’t stress enough that you should certainly maintain a Scripture reading and praying time daily. That’s important.

How do you feel about the Catholic Study Bible? Also since I have done some research of some apologists such as Scott Hahn, how do you feel about Patrick Madrid?
 
The Catholic study Bible is good and Patrick Madrid is a good solid Catholic man.

I would also check out www.biblechristiansociety.com
John Martignoni is a good guy also, there are some free downloads over there.

I would also recommend looking for the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur, this doesn’t mean it is completely guaranteed as fact, but means that it has been reviewed and is very consistant as Catholic belief. Though sometimes some stuff can slip through by a lazy\mistaken bishop\person it is most of the time very Catholic.

Patrick Madrid is good! He wrote (actually I guess it would be edited) Surpirsed By Truth and the “sequels” to it. I’ve also got his Where’s That in the Bible; it’s really small and a quick read. I also like Why Do Catholics Do That? by Kevin Orlin Johnson. What faith background are you coming from?

Oh, and I really like this website. And of course Catholic Answers and CAF.

I’ll second that. Also, if you’re confused by anything in the Catechism, you can purchase (or read online, I think) “The Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church,” a shorter summary of the CCC in Question/Answer format. If you were to post a question about the Catechism, that’s the first place I would look if I wanted to provide you with an answer.

I love The Journey Home! Oh and there is supposed to be a companion program to go with that Catholicism for Dummies book, but I don’t know when it is…
 
Someone asked me what, if any, is my faith currently — to answer Mormon (I have not been active for months) and recently as I was looking at my values, one from childhood, it being Catholicism — my parents were Protestants, nonetheless my foundation started from the church (Thanks Mom)

As of today as I was reviewing my life, I have committed to RCIA, hopefully here in Orem, UT, I say that because I am preparing to move sooner than I had planned and am concerned about consistency in the parish here versus in Arizona, where I am moving.

The LDS church and me doctrine wise are going in different ways so I am happy about my road to Catholicism.

Anyone out there, maybe former LDS or knows a Mormon that converted to the church, how was your journey to the church? How, if applicable, was your family and friends outside of the church supportive or indifferent?

I am driven to the church and the future that holds.

I think maybe this podcast might help out. It’s about a couple, one Mormon and one Catholic. They decided to figure out which faith they would both join in before they got married. They are married now but they recount different things that they went through.
