The books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy in the bible are filled with instructions regarding animal sin offerings. Basically the animals are slaughtered and offered up in place of the penitent sinner. So what we have here is a vicarious (substitution) atonement.
I’m wondering what is the Muslim position in this case? I know Muslims assert everyone is responsible for their own sins; there can be no vicarious atonement as Christians claim about Christ’s sacrifice. One of the main reasons the temple was built was for animal sacrifices. So what do Muslims make of this?
