Depends on what you mean. There is now the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, which used to be called the Holy Office of the Inquisition.

Recently there was a case of a US Bishop (Arizona?) who sent out a letter with certain doctrinal propositions that every diocesan volunteer or employee had to sign and I think one woman refused to sign it and she was let go. That’s a kind of inquisition. If I were a bishop I would do that. Also one of my first acts would be to put pro-abortion Catholic politicians on notice. They would have a grace period for private meetings and opportunities to recant and if not, excommunication. That’s a kind of inquisition as well.

So yeah, bishops should generally be making necessary inquiries to ensure Catholics are professing, well, Catholicism.

Perhaps you are unaware of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith?

Would you start another inquisition if you had the power?
That’s kind of a loaded question. Loaded because there is nothing spelled out about what you mean by “Inquisition.”

If by Inquisition, you mean the grossly inaccurate caricature whereby the Church supposedly tortured false confessions out of people and burnt millions at the stake, then the answer is no.

If by Inquisition, you mean something along the line of what Scottgun mentioned in his post, whereby the Church reasonably calls to task those Catholics in public roles who are willfully and knowingly departing from Church teaching, then the answer would be yes (and this is already being done through the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith)

There is probably more misinformation regarding the Inquisition than any other event in Church History (perhaps only surpassed by the inaccuracies about the Crusades and Galileo). The Catholic Educator’s Resource Center has several good articles clarifying some of the most common misconceptions (as they also do on the Crusades and Galileo).

By inquisition I mean essentially a system by which the Vatican would retain the Church’es orthodoxy.

That is the purpose of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

The office of inquisition hasn’t gone anywhere, therefore your poll is really meaningless.
