Canon Law and the Catechism both call Confirmation the second sacrament of initiation and Communion as the third and last. It’s certainly what converts would experience and so would Catholic children in a growing number of dioceses.

WOW - I did not know this. I was confirmed the year after making my first communion which - many years later - is still the practice in our Diocese.

I wonder if the confusion in this order came about when the Pope Pius X lowered the age of first communion from about 14 yo to about 8 yo.

That’s exactly when the order was toppled. There is no reason to delay confirmation past the age of reason and dioceses are slowly starting to return the sacraments to their original order.

Our diocese celebrated the restored order for almost a decade, until we were suppressed and our area of the suppressed diocese was annexed to a diocese that confirmed in grade 10. The compromise reached was to allow parishes to celebrate confirmation for students as young as grade 6 or as old as grade 10. This year was the first year our parish would have had students in grade 6 who hadn’t already been confirmed in grade 2. No parent requested the sacrament for their child and we have no regular catechesis.
