Hello,

I’m posting this because I’m not exactly sure what to think of a particular dream I just had. It was a nightmare and the imagery in this dream does have me somewhat concerned. If anyone can give me some insight as to what it could be, I would greatly appreciate it.

To jump right in,

I and another person (a friend, perhaps?) were in a dark, old house in a town of some sort. We took a lady upstairs with us, and we quickly noticed she had strange markings on her. Her right arm was dyed completely black, her hand had three differing shades of black on her nails. One fully black, one half black, and one without-- I took note of this in my dream, and it is pretty distinctive as it stands out. We tried to clean this off, with a cloth.

She then tells me of her life. To summarize, she is a cannibal. And is part of a group of cannibals. She laments that fifty nine years ago she butchered and froze a body of another woman, and bitterly comments that ‘they won’t finish her’, preferring ‘fresher meat’.

Suddenly, I’m assaulted by complete darkness. I cannot see a thing, and the scary part comes as a woman quickly flashes across my eyes. This woman, dressed in all white with her eyes covered by a cloth, appears-- pale as a ghost. This, of course, frightens me as she appears floating above me and then suddenly disappears into the darkness again. And laughs in the darkness.

I was so distressed by the dream, that I began praying and saying various things to shout it down. To which, I woke up deeply disturbed.

Now. I am open to it just being another dream. But the… supernatural and dark themes do have me concerned. At first, I thought it was a demon or the devil. But I think, if circumstances were different, it could’ve been an image of a saint that flashed before my eyes. But the surroundings and atmosphere is all wrong.

What could it be? Am I under spiritual attack?

I think looking for meaning in dreams is a waste of time and effort. I’ve read some Freud, and he seems to make some good points, but my understanding of dreams is that they are simply random memories that your subconscious is trying to make sense out of, quite often in a symbolic way.

In a Freudian interpretation, a house is a sex organ, going up or down stairs is sex, etc. But an old woman? Cannibalism? Blacks signs? I think even Freud wouldn’t be too sure of those. Why the number 59? Any relation to real life? Anything you’ve watched or read lately that might tie in–i.e., horror movies?

I really wouldn’t give it much thought. It seems to me that if the devil wants to tempt you, he’s got a lot better ways than sending you a bad dream!

Dreams are mostly just the editing floors of our head. I’d not be too concerned.

too much late night TV. Or something you ate, or the room you sleep in is too cold,…see, too many possibilities!

If you really want to, wrap a rosary around your hand and sleep with it, maybe even say a few decades before falling asleep. I do that and it is comforting.

I think people can be very quick to dismiss dreams as just the scientific workings of our brain. I happen to think in a lot of cases our dreams are more than that. Look at sleep paralysis. There is a perfectly good scientific explanation. But there is an even better spiritual one.

Job 33 14-19:
“For God speaks on one way, and in two, though people do not perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep slumber falls on mortals, while they slumber on their beds, then he opens their ears, and terrifies them with warnings, that he may turn them aside from their deeds, and keep them from pride, to spare their souls from the Pit, their lives from traversing the river.”

I have found not only does he speak through dreams but sometimes he also allows spiritual attacks to occur in our dreams as well (if it serves a greater good such as to help turn us away from sin.) This is exactly what happened to me. I know what I saw was not God but I new it was because he had permitted it. Throughout any of these experiences it is extremely important to remember that whatever happens God is still totally in control. For anything to occur he has to permit it.

I do not know if your dream is from God, or simply permitted by God as I would assume either would have different objectives. I do not know if it is a warning or a spiritual attack or something else. But to me it does sound like a spiritual attack. Or that you have been allowed a glimpse into something spiritual (in this case a bad situation). For what reason I can not say. But pray over it! Ask God if it was just a dream or if it was from him or if it was a spiritual attack. Ask him to guide you through it.

If this was a spiritual attack, I still get these sometimes but having the rosary next to your bed and the Holy Bible and some holy water can’t hurt (i have done this and found the spiritual attacks have lessened.)

May God bless!

Saying the rosary is good advice!

Whenever I’m spooked by a dream, or am kept awake by my overactive imagination, I’ll hold my Miraculous Medal in my hand and recite the Rosary while asking Our Lady to calm my fluttering heart. Let me tell you, she’s never failed me. No sooner do I start rattling off Hail Marys, I fall asleep and everything that had me worried or frightened is forgotten. We’re so blessed to have such a caring mother!
