To summarize what I understand about how Catholics understand Bible is Inspired:
  1. Bible = historical text
  2. Church established and empowered by Jesus
  3. Church canon that Bible is Inspired and Holy
I have come to understand numbers 1 and 3. But for reference purposes, can someone show me where, preferably in the Bible, it states that the Church has authority given by God?

Thank You

Acts 2:42 … doctrine, community, sacred rite (bread).
Eph 5:25-26 … Christ loved the Church.
1 Tim 3:15 … church is pillar/foundation of truth.
Mt 16:18; 20:20 … Christ protects Church.
Heb 13:17 … obey.
Mt 18:17-18 … church as final authority.
Mt 23:2 … Pharisees succeeded Moses (seat of Moses).
1 Cor 5:5; 1 Tim 1:20 … excommunication.

Thank you, Eileen. But I’m afraid those passages just don’t say it clearly enough for me, except maybe 1 Timothy 3:15. Got any more? (BTW, great link. Thanks!)

“And I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock ‘Peter’ is Greek for ‘rock’] 1 will build my Church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it” (Matt. 16:18).

“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you loose on Earth shall be loosed in heaven” (Matt. 16:19).
Since the Church was promised the guidance of the Holy Spirit, all that She claims to be true is truth. The second statement shows that the Church has this power and authority. Also Christ said that “As the Father has sent me so also I send you”.

Thanks everyone for your posts. Ricko, I understand you are relating the Church to Peter as he was the rock it was to be built upon. But, you also say “Since the Church was promised the guidance of the Holy Spirit, all that She claims to be true is truth.” Can you show site this reference? Thank you.
