It was specifically announced that he would not be giving communion to attending dignitaries to avoid just such thoughts as you expressed here.

I figured either he, or one of his staff, would think of the potential issues and deal with it in this manner. A good way to handle the situation and the balance the demands of diplomacy, charity and religion (imo).

Don’t know if any dignitaries rec’d communion but I assume the Catholic ones did. Over 500 priests helped distribute communion with the Pope.
It was handled well - the Pope and the Secretary of State individually greeted all the dignitaries before Mass. The new Pope, despite being a shy man by nature according to friends and family, seemed very at ease chatting with them all. Once Mass started, the dignitaries were treated the same as all other pilgrims.

I did see that Pope Francis gave Communion via intinction to the deacons who assisted at the altar (they also received kneeling). I haven’t noticed a pope using the intinction method before.

Yes, I noticed that also. Recieving by intinction solves so many issues! And our Eastern brothers like it!

There is a beautiful, tiny church in the WVA mountains with a fabulous priest and this is how he distributes. Of course, even at the height of ski season he can easily manage to distribute communion alone.I agree. It is the practice of dipping the host into the precious blood before communicating. It requires reception directly on the tongue.

My great wish for His Holiness was that he would abolish Communion in the Hand. Perhaps he will urge the Church to move toward intinction? If so then that would solve many issues. I have received this way at Divine Liturgy and it is wonderful.

Remember that Card. Bergoglio was the Ordinary for Eastern-rite Catholics in Argentina who did not have their own Ordinaries, so he is familiar with the practices of the East.

EWTN just had a second presentation of the mass and communion just finished. I did note that Pope Francis gave communion only to the few who assisted at the altar and then took his chair. Obviously, the announcement that was made earlier was followed; i.e., that he did not distribute communion to the attendees of the mass.
