Installation of new bishop in Baltimore

I feel like Cinderella going to the Ball …

I’m going to be present at the installation of Archbishop Edwin O’Brien as the fifteenth Archbishop of Baltimore!! When the date was announced, I promised myself I would be there, somehow. I attend the Cathedral for many masses, although it is not my home parish. Last week they asked for volunteers to assist with vesting the clergy for the Installation. My name was first on the list!

According to the archdiocesan paper today, there will be 392 priests, 59 deacons, 27 seminarians and 71 cardinals, archbishops and bishops attending, as well as 1618 other representatives from the diocese.

The Cathedral will be packed and jammed, but there is reserved seating for the volunteers. It will be broadcast on EWTN. The only potential for disappointment will be the music. I ran into a friend who’s singing in the choir, and she said the requested music is not very good. Some non-musician priest picked it out. Oh, well, nothing this side of heaven is ever quite perfect.

I can’t wait! I wonder who I’ll get to assist??

So when we watch on TV and see irregularities with the priestly vestments, we can come here and complain directly to you, right! 😉
 
I wanted to go! Unless it’s on network TV, I can’t even watch it. We don’t have EWTN.

Exactly! 😃

It will be on Monday, October 1. The procession, which is expected to take at least 30 minutes itself, begins at 1:30, but officially the Mass starts at 2:00. I don’t know if the EWTN broadcast is live or not. I don’t have cable, so I won’t get it either.

It’s really going to be cool - Archbishop O’Brien will be greeted at the door of the Cathedral by the Rector, who will invite him in and have him vested (most assuredly not by me!) before he makes his entrance.

Today they waxed the floor of most of the Cathedral. I guess they’ll finish tomorrow.

Betsy, it looks great!!! Everybody looks well vested, and the place is clean and bright.

All of you are blessed to receive Archbishop O’Brien, who was one of, if not the best, bishops for the US military!!!

😃 Now then- Did anybody go to Charm City Cakes and get His Excellency a Duff Special?😉 Duff might be marginally Jewish, but I believe Mary Alice is Catholic (and well organized).
 
Yes, Archbishop O’Brien is wonderful. He was on EWTN when he was the military ordinariate. I admire someone like him who would make extra sacrifices to serve the military. You are blessed to have him.

Go Bishop O’Brien!!! There are “pro choice” democrat politcal leaders sitting in the front row and the Bishop is directly addressing being pro-life!!! Way to go. —KCT
 
I missed it, but I can’t wait for him to begin.

He was well respected in the archdiocese of the military, and it seems appropriate that he takes over during the 40 Days of Life.

I saw a little bit of it (wbaltv.com had it, too). I caught it during Holy Communion. I didn’t have the volume turned on though, since I was at work (and I work for the State).

I was looking for the priests from my local parish (St. Ursula’s) - didn’t see them there from the quick glance I got.
 
It was fabulous! I was in the school cafeteria helping the priests to vest. I met one of Abp. O’Brien’s classmates from New York, a priest from Denver (the only one from there - Abp. Chaput could not come) and a bunch of others. We volunteers were seated in the Lady Chapel with a TV screen, but we were really right behind the main altar, so we could sneak a peek that way, too. One of our local bishops brought Holy Communion to us. Very nice.

I didn’t see either Msgr. Farmer or Fr. DeAscanis in the vesting area. I guess they were busy doing the Lord’s work!

If you mean to ask about my co-workers, most of them were ladies of retirement age (that would be older than I! 🙂 ) from the Cathedral parish. I see a number of them at daily Mass, and finally learned some names.

If you meant to ask the names of the priests I assisted, I have no idea. I was assigned to the priests; other ladies helped the bishops in another area. I met one who had come from Denver, one from New York (a classmate of the Archbishop), one from Washington, DC, and a bunch of others. I neither recognized nor remembered any names. Things were pretty rushed, as many arrived very close to the beginning of Mass, so we did not have much time to talk.

Jennifer G, Msgr. Farmer was quoted saying good things about the installation in this week’s Catholic Review, so I guess he was there after all!
